4.0 out of 5 stars Good tool.
I usually steer away from gimmicky items, but I trust the Gerber brand and was impressed by the positive reviews here and elsewhere.
Two small details kept it from a 5 Star rating. The handle 'feels' an inch or two too long, and the heel of the axe is enclosed in the scabbard.
The first complaint is personal and not a big deal at all.

I loved this axe the moment I put it to use for clearing brush. The weight in the head is nice and allows you to get much more out of your swing than using a machete. This axe will blow through trees and branches that are 1"-3" with no problem at all. If you want to take on anything bigger you need to use a bigger axe or saw. I camp quite a bit (Boy Scout leader). I use a hand axe as a light hammer as much as I use it to hack wood. Having the heel exposed in the scabbard allows hammer use while keeping the 'business end' safely enclosed.
I'll overcome that by being careful.
It's very light weight. Mine was sharp enough out of the box. Saw is way more useful than I first imagined.
It's comforting to know that replacement saws are available. Nice touch from a quality brand.
Well recommended.

I bought this to use when camping/hiking/hunting. I has proven useful and much more durable than the standard wooden handle model. My kids haven't broken it yet and it shows no rust! The saw is good for small camping/woods tasks like removing small limbs that are in the way.
My only small complaint is that is hard to find when you drop it in the dark and the texture of the handle somehow keeps reflective tape (my solution to finding it in the dark) from sticking very well. I ended up putting on a bright colored lanyard.
Overall, a good practical addition. I will probably buy another one to keep in my truck.

The edge will need to be touched up every other day or so of continual use as long as you are not chopping rocks with it. Luckily it is very easy to touch up the edge of this axe.

My only problem with this axe is the design of the head and how the handle wraps around the head instead of the head going around the handle. After a week of serious chopping I noticed that wood chips were being forced between the head and the handle. This happened so much so that the plastic around the head started to bulge out and so far one side has partially cracked off. The axe still performs well even if it's not as pretty as it once was. Their "gator" grip on the handle only lasted a day of use.

In my opinion Gerber just needs to do some slight modifications to the design to make this a genuinely stellar axe. Just putting a lip on each side of the head so that the handle could be tucked behind the handle would do the job perfectly.

this is a great product the edge was a little dull when it came but i sharped it and now it is sharp as a knife. The saw in handle is tough and has cut easily through every so far. good combo if you go hunting or camping.

1.0 out of 5 stars Weak sheath, September 29, 2010

Within six weeks of use (chopping firewood for camping) the sheath for the blade has become badly chipped away, with slivers of wood getting between it and the blade, exposing a large portion of one side of the blade. I do not believe the axe is safe to use and am returning it to Gerber for warranty replacement.

1.0 out of 5 stars A lightweight., June 24, 2010
This review is from: Gerber 22-41420 Gator Combo Axe II (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this axe about a year ago and the head broke off of the handle it's first day of use on a camping trip 50 miles from anywhere. I fell for the saw blade in the handle gimmick and I think that's exactly why this product failed so quickly. Instead of a nice solid handle made of fiberglass or hickory you get a hollow tube. The saw is pretty useless as well. This tool was not build for the grind, but it might be nice if you need to do some light weeding in your back yard. If you need an axe you can rely on this is not it.

This axe combo works well and is light for its size. I really like the handle and the included small saw is actually usable and effective. It comes pretty dull but that is easy to fix. My only complaint is the finish on the head is a little sloppy but it does not significantly effect its function.

A very well made ax and saw combo, ax head is heavy enough to split good size pieces of wood or fell a tree. Saw will do up to 6 in branches easily. Great addition to any camping outfit.

1.0 out of 5 stars *DANGEROUS* Broke on first use!, August 30, 2011

This review is from: Gerber 22-41420 Gator Combo Axe II (Tools & Home Improvement)
I was very excited to get this in the mail just days before my backpacking trip. It came neatly packaged, and closely resembled the smaller counterpart hatchet that I have from Gerber. Upon initial inspection, it seemed to be of the same quality, too. I happily strapped it to my pack, shoved my emergency hand chainsaw in a pouch as a backup, and packed my truck.

On day 2 of my adventure I finally had a need for it. I had a small piece of wood, very dry, that appeared to have fallen off a broken tree at least 4 seasons ago (nice and dry). I placed it on a solid rock, took a swing at it, and hit it square on (not an amateur by any means). Well, the axe head stuck in the log part ways, splitting it down its length, and the handle to the Gerber 'gator combo' piece of junk broke right off at the neck.

Upon closer inspection, it was easy to see why this happened. While the unit has a full tang, the shaft is HOLLOW! I expected it to be hollow at the base where the hand saw is located, but certainly not the whole length of the unit! It was built like a cheap hollow chocolate Easter bunny, with about the same tinsel strength to boot!

My only suggestion - do not buy this piece of junk. It clearly is stamped right on the side "Made in Taiwan", and it certainly boasts typical Taiwanese manufacturing quality.

Shame on you Gerber for selling this unit, as it is a major safety hazard (what if the axe had broken off and not stuck in the wood?) and shame on me for thinking I could strike gold twice. The hatchet is thumbs up, this piece of junk is thumbs down and going in the trash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid combo for hiking or camping, January 18, 2009

I found the hatchet to be a good size for recreational use, wouldn't be the best for downing large trees because of its size, but one should assume that even prior to purchasing. For it's intended use, downing small trees, knocking off limbs it works great. The finish, which appears to be a gray paint does come off but that's expected. I did split some large logs with this axe and it worked OK, I had to bang it on a hard surface a few times, but as I said before, one should assume this with an axe/hatchet this size.

The saw in the handle works great as well, it's a bit short, but probably about as big as it can be in that handle length. Could be used for making cleaner cuts, notching, etc...

Overall this is a great addition to anyone's gear if they are going to be in the woods for an extended time. It is very light for what it is. It would be great in emergencies, and using the saw and hatchet in conjunction, would allow someone to down just about anything given enough time. Needless to say, I won't be camping without this tool anytime soon.
