3.0 out of 5 stars Hard to open and handle is slippery
Maybe I'm being over-critical on a reasonably priced knife set, but 3 stars means "It's OK" -- and it is just OK.

Pros:
* Low price
* Light weight
* One-handed operation to open/close
* Nice fit and finish and razor sharp

Cons:

This review is from: Gerber 22-41758 EVO and EVO Jr. Knives Combo Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
Length:: 1:18 Mins

Pros:
* Low Cost
* Low Weight Evo Serrated - 2.80 oz, and Evo Jr. - 1.80 oz
* Adjustable One-handed operation to open/close
* Well Balanced
* Very Sharp, and Holds a Great Edge
* Anodized aluminum cut-out handle
* Handle is Very Strong, but lightweight
* Knife can be very tight, but with a Torx bit, One can loosen it to their taste

Cons:
* Handle is a bit slippery to hold on the Evo Jr.

I had no problem opening the Evo Serrated Edge, but the Evo Jr. was abit stiff, but with the use of a Torx bit, I loosen it to my Taste. Now both open with a quick smooth action. For more infomation and specs check out the Gerber Gear Site.

I have added a quick and low resolution video to show the one handed opening, and both knives side by side.

Supper Shipping Saver (Free Shipping) is quite fast.

Maybe I'm being over-critical on a reasonably priced knife set, but 3 stars means "It's OK" -- and it is just OK.

Pros:
* Low price
* Light weight
* One-handed operation to open/close
* Nice fit and finish and razor sharp

Cons:
* Hard to open compared to bigger knives and thumb stud is not tall enough
* Aluminum handle is not very strong and is slippery
* Blade is too thin
* Blade is not tall enough
* Belt clip has to go

The slender design of the blade and handle results in a knife that is hard to open using the thumb-stud. It also feels small in your hand to the point where I'd be worried that my hand will slip forward onto the blade if any forward pressure was exerted. The aluminum handle is slippery even when dry. The belt clip is useless and I removed it immediately. I had the tiny Torx driver necessary to remove the belt clip but the bolts stripped so I just pried the handle up until the screws ripped out of the soft aluminum body.

The protrusion from the back of the knife's blade isn't intended to open the knife; rather, it's to prevent your hand from slipping forward when the knife is open.

If this is in your price range, it's an OK choice; but, I'd recommend something beefier with a non-slip handle if you can find it. I carry the little one and am satisfied enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, October 25, 2011

I bought the set for my boyfriend, who lost his old gerber knife a while back. Both were so sharp out of the package that you could drop it tip down and it would stick in the kitchen floor (I wasn't happy when he tried it..). I use the mini all the time; the small size is perfect for my hands. I was a little disappointed that the full sized evo handle is plastic, but it's held up well so far. Overall, was very pleased with the set, especially for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not to shabby!, October 13, 2011

Right outa the packafe razor sharp! Great EDC pair! Love the Lock up!, is solid no problems at all. Great cheap knives. The bad thing is on the big one the clip broke of cause of striped screws :/ and the smaller ones flick out motion sticks every now and then and there a little slippery. There lower end makes of the CRKT M16 series.
For the money there great sharp fast deploying and ready to work and since there cheep you can thrash um and not care. I recomend for a pretty ok work knife.

Gerber has always been my favorite knife product. I own and collect several models of Gerber products, including a kitchen counter set, and have been satisfied with all of them. They are easy to sharpen and hold an edge very well. They are also very well built. This set is a very affordable buy.

Great buy for the money, both knives are razor sharp and arrived in great shape. However, this is coming from someone who has never owned knives.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected..., April 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gerber 22-41758 EVO and EVO Jr. Knives Combo Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this product thinking that it would be similar to my Anodized black aluminum cut-out handle Blade I already own (Gerber Evo(tm)-Mid 3.12" blade-Serrated Edge - Tanto G000202) but was surprised to find that the quality was not the same. The Evo Jr. has a piece of metal or aluminum that covers the handle and is painted silver (looks cheep), the Gerber Tanto G000202 has a solid black Anodized handle. Also the Ev Jr is smaller than I expected and is very limited in its usefulness. The Evo is a bit to big and uncomfortable to carry in my pocket and seems sturdier and better made with the black Anodized aluminum cut-out handle.

I bought the Evo and Evo Jr as a gift so I will not be sending it back, but if you are looking for an outstanding carry blade, I suggest going with the Evo(tm) Mid 3.12" Tonto blade. It is a perfect size and the Tonto seems far superior.

These knives work great and weight nothing. I use the small one on a daily basis, and the larger one is my backup hunting knife. I like the clips since they are thick steel and you can clip to your pocket, and it also adds an additional gripping point - it's not a cheap clip that you would find on something like a pen, feels like it's part of the knife. The knives flip open easily - they don't always open all the way using your index finger, but you only need it open a little to use your thumb to fully extend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-priced combo pack, October 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gerber 22-41758 EVO and EVO Jr. Knives Combo Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
At its price point it (the Evo) is light weight, durable, well-made, and has a reasonably decent blade. Great price in the combo pack with the smaller Evo Jr. Easy opening with a single lock (would be even better with a CRKT double lock system) mechanism. Reasonably sharp from the factory with the combo edge cuts rope, tarp, etc. with ease. I purchased the Evo to compare to the CRKT knives of the same type that I already own (M16 EDC and M21 SFG). In around the same price range it is a good alternative, though the blade material is slightly different between the two companies. Finally, given how affordable these are, if one does 'break' a new one won't break the bank.

The Evo Jr. makes for a good, cheap, pock-sized knife for day-to-day use. It is a tad bit smaller than the CRKT M16EDC, but that makes it more pocket friendly, yet not too small to be hard to use. I do, however, prefer the tanto tip and serrations of the CRKT M16EDC to the standard blade on the Evo Jr.
