On several occasions, this knife has opened in my pocket.

This is the first assisted opening Gerber pocket knife I've ever owned. I've been collecting knives for 20+ years and I've actually avoided most Gerber products for a while now. Honestly, I've been extremely disappointed in Gerber over the last several years. I haven't been happy with a lot of their knife designs. This, of course, is just one man's opinion, but right now I can also think of at least three recent product recalls. These recalls have been related to poor design, cheap material, and malfunctions that could lead to injury.

I really like the design of this particular knife and the materials seem to be good quality. I bought one to give it a try. It feels like a solid knife and there is no blade play when it is in the open position. I'm not a fan of serrated blades, but the grind on this knife and the design of the serrations have resulted in a very nice edge.

The bad - and dangerous - part is that this knife opens very, very easily. On more than one occasion, I've reached into my pocket to find that the blade was in the open position. This is extremely dangerous. I own and have carried a number of other assisted opening knives - Kershaw, CRKT, etc - and I've never had this problem with those products. If you purchase this knife, please be careful. (FYI.... this knife is advertised by Gerber as the "2.0" because the earlier version was recalled and updated.) As much as I like the design, I'm giving it 2 stars because of the safety factor. I seriously doubt I'll be buying anything from Gerber in the near future.

The Gerber Instant is the best FAST assist knife that I think Gerber has made. I am a diehard Kershaw guy and my EDC is a Kershaw Tactical Blur Knife, but this is a close second. It just feels very solid.

Most gerber knives, in my opinion, feel very cheap on the open. Like the spring is very lightweight metal, because of that I tended to shy away from them. So when I saw this knife I had blown it off as another piece of Gerber junk. Boy was I wrong.

This knife has a nice weight, even with the handle made of G10, a testament to its frame. The lock, which is not the traditional frame lock and is instead that silver dot above the pivot, is VERY solid. When you deploy the knife it opens, locks, and the blade feels like its not going anywhere.

If Gerber can keep this kind of work up, I may just switch my allegiance.

I have only ever owned one knife before this so I don't know much about knives but this knife is great for me. I bought it as a defense weapon when I'm walking alone at night. I have had it for about a month now. I have never had it open up while in my pocket or backpack and it opens fast! (when I want it to) I also like that it stops half way when closing so that you could never accidentally slice your fingers while closing it. It's also very sharp and I happen to use it for more than I originally intended or expected. I love it and would buy it again.

This is a sturdy and handy knife to carry when working. The blade is tough enough to handle most every day jobs although it got dull fairly quickly after working with some boxes and tape. But it took a new edge pretty quickly and seems just fine.

My only complaints are (a) that the blade is not as firmly fixed between the scales as I would like so that it moves ever so slightly on the horizontal axis and (b) it is easy to open accidentally in your pocket it you are not careful.

That is, when the blade is extended and you press it from side to side, it moves a little bit and is not as rigid as it might be. This is not a big deal really, and the knife should not be used as a real prying tool, but sometimes that is exactly what you do with any knife, especially when working in the field.

Also, some reviews have mentioned that the locking mechanism is a little weak. I have not found that to be the case, but you need to be careful when gripping the knife, especially with gloves, that you do not accidentally press the button that will unlock the blade.

As for the possibility that it will open in your pocket, this is really only an issue if you have it in a loose pocket somewhere and the little tab that assists you when opening it with one hand gets snagged on something. The fact that it is so easy to open with one hand also makes it easy to open accidentally, although this has only happened to me once or twice and it was not a big deal.

All in all, a great field knife that feels good in your hand and looks better with the nicks and scratches that it will get from real use.

I have the original, recalled version of this knife, which I really like and have not experienced the problems relating to the recall.
I finally got my hands on the new revised version and very little has changed.
The Clip on the back is now wider and sturdier, more centered across the handle which I really like. The locking mechanism seems about the same as my original, but as I understand it, it was revised to avoid problems some of the original batch experienced.
The G10 handle has an amazing feel in my hand, and the mild texturing provides a great grip that won't slip. I love the thumb plunge lock design makes opening and closing this knife very functional with one hand.
Overall I think its a terrific knife in this price point and would gladly recommend this to my friends.
