From the Manufacturer

Sometimes an axe is too much weight for thinning brush. And sometimes a knife just isn't enough. That's when you need the Gerber brush thinner. A dramatically shaped carbon steel blade set in a sturdy, highly tactile handle. It's ideal for clearing out brush and limbs from tree stands and streamside settings. A non-stick coating on the blade reduces friction, therefore reducing work.

My husband had an older Fiskars brush axe that my son and I were using extensively to clear trails. In order to regain ownership of his machete he bought us each a Gerber brush axe because of the nice sheath that came with them for the same price as the Fiskars with the plastic sheath. After no more that half a dozen uses the handle cracked in the middle. Apparently the blade doesn't go very far into the plastic handle which seems a serious design flaw for a tool that is used for heavy whacking. Apparently the new Fiskars are plagued with the same problem. I would think Fiskar/Gerber would find this a liability. The response from customer service was rather automated...."Return it by insured mail and we will decide if it will be replaced or repaired."...even though I enclosed detailed photos of the broken knife handle. With shipping costs and the weight of this product it makes little sense to send them a broken knife that I know cannot be repaired.

I have two of these, one made by Fiskars(-$10) and this Gerber. They are 95% identical with handle color and the sheath (nylon, on the Gerber) being the only differences. They are not built to fell redwoods, as the poly handle to blade connection will likely fail, but they are a great LIGHT duty camp machete/hatchet/knife. Ive even used them to dig and scrape out a fire pit and to quickly move hot coals into cooking mounds. You really need to wrap the handle in grip tape to keep it from slipping out of sweaty hands, but for a single tool that replaces almost five pounds of pack weight its awesome. As a bonus, its easily sharpened and wicked looking. Just the thing to grab when a zombie horde wanders into your campsite.

I've had one of these for over 5 years now. Mine is the same basic design , and I love it. I bought this one for my bother for x-mas.

It's been used it for everything from blazing trails, to cutting brush out back, to shaping my bushes out front.

The curved blade tip is a unique addition, and actually helps cut brush cleanly and well. You have no real need for a weed wacker, if you have one of these!

The weight is good, and it's great for chopping away small branches and almost any type of brush. I keep mine extremely sharp, and have never had any issues with it. It holds an edge very well (it's a Gerber - 'nough said)

Remeber, NEVER cut or swing this thing down towards yourself and #2, put a small loop of rope thru the hole in the handle so you can twist it around your wrist, once you get swinging, this thing can become airborne pretty quick...

When I saw the hooked blade design of this trimmer I knew it would work better than a tropical style machete here in the north. The springy nature of raspberrys, multiflora rose, and greenbriar make them difficult to cut because it just bends out of the way. The hooked blade catches these stems and really helps to cut them cleanly. The long handle keeps your hands well away from the pickers. The blade goes though trees up to an inch cleanly and with little effort. The weight is just right and I have swung this trimmer for half an hour or longer clearing a trail without fatigue.

The sheath is essential for carrying this trimmer into the field. The long handle does get in the way when the sheath is attached to your belt, but positioning it on your back makes this inconsequential.

This is a good product that works for it's intended purpose. It is not a universal tool or a survival knife. It is a good blade for clearing trails and cutting back invasive species.

1. I have the original Gerber which is lighter with a hollow handle and no case/sheath This is clearly heavier with a solid handle. Basically this Gerber version is a better deal than the Fiskars version.

2. The Gerber arrived with a double beveled edge but not sharp. Although you'd want an axe grind on it I think.

3. The padded, zippered "case" seems odd. It does have a belt loop, but it's really not a sheath. The Gator Machete Pro sheath is far better and more functional.

4. Both versions work very well for brush & vines. I think the decision point to choose this versus a full machete would be your using environment. In a crowded brushy woods environment with lots of vines, this is a highly effective tool.

5. The harder decision would be choosing between this and the Gerber Gator Machete Pro (a copy of the Woodmans Pal Classic). The Brush Trimmer is longer. The Gato Machete Pro has a much better sheath.

Don't buy this item! The blade is of very poor quality. Blade edge olled over on first day of use.

I like this blade. Have not broke the handle yet as other reviews have stated. I would recommend, just dont go around trying to clear a forest with it. Thats not whats its made for.

I would have given this blade 5 stars except for it's one flaw... I have finally broken it's plastic handle out after about 3 years of heavy use... It is way lighter than any Axe... it will chop through the same stuff any traditional hand Axe will it holds a good edge and is easy to sharpen... if you have even the most elementary skill at sharpening... I mostly like the way it balances in your hand which honestly is is it's most important feature... as any well seasoned outdoor woodsman will tell you... the fast blade cuts the deepest... this blade allows you the proper twirl in the hand to get good force into the cut that heaver axes and blades do not... the bill hook on the end is also great for altering the angle of attack on your cuts by simply varying your swing in just a bit shorter than the last to get a back cut into the surface...
I really like this blade... I have cut brush with this blade up to 5" in diameter... it's one tough cookie... guess I will have to buy a new one... or maybe I will attempt to make a wooden handle for it...
