The handle is bulky and heavy - much more so than you would expect for a blade of this size. It's also a bit gaudy (again more metal and random shiny bits with what appears to glued on black rubber grip. The grip _may_ be inset, but I didn't really want to try peeling it back to find out.

This thing will be left in the toolbox or clipped to something in a shed.

Not what I would have expected from Gerber.

This is the first Gerber knife I have bought in a long time and I was disappointed to see that it was made in China. I have several older Gerber products, including one of the original multi-tools, and I'm pretty sure they were all made in the US. I guess time will tell if this will hold up as well as their made in the US products, though I am not very hopeful. In my experience most Chinese stainless steel eventually starts to rust, and I have no doubt this will too.

Regarding the design, I would say that it is OK, but there is probably a reason why Gerber has discontinued it. It's pretty heavy considering the length of the blade. Not something you would want for backpacking. The primary reason I selected this (apart from it being an Amazon Lightning Deal) was the bottle opener built in. That sounds handy, but it's not the easiest bottle opener to use. It's built into the "carabiner" part of the knife, so to open a bottle, you are fighting the spring of the clip.

Regarding the "carabiner," that name is a bit of a stretch. At best it's a clip, but not a very wide mouthed one at that.

I'll keep this in my glove box to use in a pinch, but I wouldn't want to use it for serious camping.

High points:
#1 - The blade lock allows you to unlock the knife with your thumb and flick the blade open with the fingernail of your index finger.
#2 - The bottle opener.

Low points:
This is a larger knife than I prefer to carry.
The locking mechanism (one mechanism; both open and closed) does not feel as secure as either a frame or liner lock mechanism to prevent the blade from closing expectantly.

If you prefer a larger knife than I do, and want a bottle opener you might really like this one. It is sharp with a good blade, it opens smoothly and the handle grip is nice.

For a similar knife of this size I prefer: Kershaw 8200RD Funxion DIY SpeedSafe Knife

Admittedly, I am a Kershaw fan. I prefer both the way the Funxion blade deploys and locks, and the way the Funxion hangs slightly lower in the pocket...Then again, price is always a consideration.

hth, high

this knife is just ok. for the price I paid and what it will be used for it was perfect. but I was kinda hoping for a little better quality. if I hadn't paid so little I would have returned it. the rubber on the sides seems to only be stuck on with cheap glue. the locking mech doesn't move all that easily and with a spring loaded blade it can make it a little tricky to close. I just use my leg or both hands. one of the screws on mine looks like it had been taken out before because the head is slightly rounded off and has nice little sharp edges where the head is messed up. the clip on top is useless. it opens the wrong way. so the item your trying to clip it to must be very small to fit into it. good luck getting it over a belt loop or something like that. (if you do get it on there good luck getting back off) for the price it was worth the 3 stars.

I got this knife when it was on sale with a lightning deal from woot. I obtained it for a single digit price. With that said for less than $10 its a very good knife. The assisted opening needs a lot of work. When left in the cold the grease/oil used to lubricate the assisted opening does not properly lubricate and the knife acts like a normal non assisted opening knife. Ergonomics are also not the best, makes for an awkward one handed opening, however this is obviously meant to be used in a more rugged camping/hunting environment based on the carabiner latch. Overall a decent knife for the price.

The knife comes sharp, and its opening and closing mechanisms are easy to use. The blade is held firmly when opened. It is comfortable to hold, and I would rate it the equal of knives I own which cost more than twice the Amazon price of this item. I would rather not have the carabiner attachment on the back, but it hasn't gotten in my way. I haven't used the knife enough to comment on how long it holds an edge.

Great looking knife, with the carabeaner being a very useful option. The issues I have run in to is the knife is not fast opening... in fact, it doesn't open on it's own at all. I tried lubricating the hinge but still had no luck. The push up button to open it does not return to it's original position either. The blade isn't the sharpest but it is able to be sharpened some what.
