5.0 out of 5 stars BG got this one right !! October 15, 2011
Color Name:Grey|Amazon Verified Purchase
Length: 4:33 Mins
This is the Best of the BG offerings. Most retailers sell it for 30 bucks which is a bit much but when I found it on sale for 19 bucks my cat like reflexes took over. This knife is no toy. Its very sturdy with no blade play and has a good solid feel... I was pleasantly surprised with how tuff this thing realy is. It will make a great back up to your fixed blade survival selection. The handle is fantastic and very grippy even when wet. The rubberized grip absorbs impact and sticks to your hand. It fits VERY nicely in the hand and feels like an extension of it. With a dual thumb stud it opens easily, locks into place with a confident "SNAP" of the lock back and securely closes for safety. You will not feel "under knifed" with this thing.

The thick but not too heavy high carbon steel blade is half serrated and comes very sharp. Love Gerbers serrations... great for cutting rope, cordage and strapping. Lots of so called knife experts reject Gerber's steel but I find it tough, dependable and easy to sharpen. The serrations cut paper better than the straight edge portion... they are danger sharp!

I like the orange accents on this type of knife... makes it easier to find in a hurry which makes sense since that's what it's for. The nylon sheath is excellent. Don't forget to melt any frayed ends with your lighter... this will help it to last longer and look great. Even comes with survival instructions that seem to be printed on moisture resistant paper. A fine knife... good job Bear and Gerber.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good so far... February 14, 2011
By Jcarey
Color Name:Grey|Amazon Verified Purchase
Saw they dropped the price on this, so i had to pull the trigger and get it.

shipped very fast, almost scary fast.

First let me explain why i picked this knife over the other Bear/Gerber knifes.
-The two "scout" foldable knifes were much to small for what i was looking for, i wanted a solid 3 1/2+ inch blade. i already have many small blade and wanted one with more lenght, so those wouldnt do.
-Second, i didnt get the 'ultimate knife' with all the bells and whistles because i already have a firestick, sharpening stone, whistle, etc. so why pay more for what i have? second, i think the 'ulimate' blade is great for people outdoors all the time as much as possible with a straight blade, but if your a traveller and aren't 'in the wild' as much, id rather have a closeable knife i can carry on my belt.

That said, heres my review of the actual blade (on first look/use)...

-Knife feels very solid in-hand. good weight to it, not to heavy, not to light, however i would say its slightly knife-side heavy over the handle(but i like that feel).
-Grip/handle is great, 'grippy' like bear says, and the handle is very comfy in my larger hands. only thing that could make it better is if it was a touch wider.
-Blade- thick, rugged. love gerbers 'drop-points'. i cant tell if this blade is pre-sharpend or not? it didn't cut well through several layers of packing tape, but sliced through paper and some light sticks easily, so i think it could be sharpend a bit for best results.
-Sheath its very strudy, love the belt straps (to sit verticle or horizontal). Knife fits perfectly snug inside. except, if you put the 'survival guide' inside its little pocket, with the knife, then the knife is extremely snug, good because you know theres no way the knife can slip out, but then it takes a bit more force to get it out. i dont mind too much. to each his own.

I will update review if any negative aspects arise, and after i test it out more heavily.
overall, great buy in my opinion at the price i got it at. ($26)

5.0 out of 5 stars GOOD KNIFE March 19, 2011
Color Name:Grey
I was hesitant to give this knife 5 stars because it's difficult to say something is perfect. But this knife deserves it for the price and utility/durability it presents. this relatively cheap knife is a true survival knife. Its very sturdy with no blade play and has a good weight to it. All this makes it very trustful. The handle is fantastic. Rubberized grip to absorb impact, some pieces of plastic but not a big deal, a fine hilt and fits VERY nicely in the hand unlike the BG scout knife. With a dual thumb stud it opens easily, locks into place very well and has a small back lock to close it swiftly. The thick but not too heavy high carbon steel blade is half serrated and comes reasonably sharp but with some touching up and the force that can be out behind it...it doesn't matter. overall great knife good job BG and gerber.
