Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Gerber 31-001015 Crucial with strap cutter and EVO combo kit. This Crucial features a strap cutter instead of a carabineer. A tour de force in tool design, the Crucial Tool gives you the essential components of a multi-tool in one remarkably light weight package. The Crucial Tool features a full-sized knife that opens with a thumb stud, just like a standard pocketknife. The half-serrated/half-fine-edge blade has razor-sharp cutting power and a blunt tip for prying and scraping. For safety, a liner lock keeps the blade securely in place. When the blade is extended, the handles can be folded and secured together to give you an accurate cut. These butterfly-style handles also provide easy-grip control over the V-cutter, and their longer length provides better torque. The handles fan out for easy access to the rest of the Crucial Tool's components: the medium flat-head screwdriver, cross-head screwdriver, bottle opener, and strap cutter. Its compact design and convenient carrying clip means you'll always have it when you need it, for slicing rope, tightening bolts, opening bottles, and more. All components safely lock into place. This safety feature lets you focus on the task at hand without the fear of the components folding up on your fingers while cutting, twisting, prying, etc. Constructed with fine stainless steel, the Crucial Tool has an appearance that matches its performance. The Crucial Tool's stainless steel composition lends durability, so this tool will stand up to the elements and retain its precision and appearance for years to come. Also featured in this combo is the EVO a mid-sized addition to EVO family. The Tanto blade shape adds more tactical styling to the already popular EVO family, titanium nitride-coated blade for strength and corrosion resistance. Liner lock mechanism for one handed closing. Finger flip for easy opening. Low rise pocket clip for easy carrying. Anodized aluminum cut-out handle.

I bought this combo stainless knife pack on the recommendation of our high school sailing coach. He likes the Crucial for sailing, so I bought the Crucial for my son and kept the EVO knife for myself. Gerber is good quality, and the price was great on Amazon. The strap cutter feature may save a kid's life, if the boat capsizes and any webbing or straps tangle up and make it hard to escape. Lots of other useful tools in a carefully designed, and well-engineered and -packaged product.

I saw this combo at a well known outdoor goods retailer, priced at 49.99.
I was about to purchase it, but checked Amazon to see what their price was, and it was significantly cheaper, so I ordered it online, and got it in 2 days, thanks to Amazon Prime.

After recieving the combo pack and opening it up, I quickly looked over the knife before putting it in my pocket. Pretty good quality knife, as i'd expect from Gerber. I have several of their other knifes and tools as well, so I knew what to expect. I've carried Gerber brand tools for over 20 years, starting with a hand-me-down original Multi-plier.

As for the Crucial tool, now THIS is what i've been wanting.
I bought it primarily for the hook knife, which is unique to this version of the Crucial.

I already own a Gerber 22-41870 Hinderer Combat Life Saver Knife with Serrated Edge knife, which includes a similar hook knife. I keep this Hinderer on the outside of my work bag for quick access when i'm at work, since the bag goes with me everywhere, when i'm on duty.
I wanted a small tool with a hook knife to carry when i'm off duty, that doesnt have the size and appearance of a large pocket knife, and this fit the bill.

Its a good size, easy to carry in a pocket, or clipped on to a belt or pants. Both the straight blade and knife are accessible with the tool closed, as well as the two screwdrivers. All of the fold out tools have a simple, yet sturdy lock thats easy to unlock.
The pliers have the wire cutter as well. Always a nice addition.

After about 20 minutes of messing with it, I'm pretty sure this will make a great addition to my existing tools and equipment...

First of all, because I know some of you out there care a lot about that stuff, this set is made in China. Personally I have no problem with it. The quality is very nice, the size of the tools/handles is perfect for my medium/large-sized hands and their weight is great for my pockets (not too bulky to weigh you down - not too tiny to forget them). The black matte color makes them look pretty discrete and sleek. Plus, the price is unbeatable. The multitool has the pliers (four sections: 1/8-inch smooth tip, 3/8-inch mildly serrated, curved serrated [like a 12-point socket], and wire cutter) and 4 tools which can be operated with the tool open or closed: Phillips semi-flattened screwdriver (one edge of the cross is #2 and the other is #1), slotted screwdriver, half-smooth/half-serrated blade, and strap cutters. This latter tool looks like a bottle opener, but instead of opening beers, this one will set you free from any kind of "shackles" such as ropes (in a boat), seat belts (in a car), or...well, clothes (might come in handy when you get intimate with your girl and you are in a hurry ;) ! The knife is simple, with a half-smooth/half-serrated blade, single-finger operated, very sturdy and very sharp. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase.

This tool is nice in the way that it is a compact no nonsense pocket tool. That being said it ia a cheap POS. It feels flimsy as if it would break if it was squeezed too hard. The pocket clip broke on the second day and the finish has almost completely rubbed off.

I have owned the green gerber crucial Gerber 30-000140 Crucial Tool, Green for about a year now, using it as my EDC multitool, and have been very happy with it. I shall start with a brief review of this tool, as the two are very similar. My first impression of the tool, I wasn't sure about the pliers, as the metal didn't seem durable, but I haven't had any trouble with it at all. The rest of the tool seemed quite durable, and has lived up to that impression. The phillips screwdriver (which has been touted as 'useless' by other reviewers) has proven surprisingly useful. I started looking for a replacement EDC tool, as I did not use the carabiner/bottle opener, and was specifically looking for a tool with a v cutter that was easily accessable. This led me to the Leatherman MUT, but it was a bit too large for EDC. Then I found this wonderful little combo deal. A Gerber crucial, which I was already familiar with, with a v cutter! I have had this tool for a few days, and usually wait to review until I have had more hands-on with a tool, but as it is so similar to the green crucial, I felt comfortable reviewing now. The blades on the crucial arrived sharp, it was a bit stiff to open, but that will work itself out over time. The EVO knife also appears quite handy. I generally prefer fixed blade knives, but I will likely use this as my back-up carry knife. The liner lock isn't the strongest, but the finger flip tab that can be used to open the knife, also serves to keep it from closing up on your hand. The coating on both tools appears durable, and should ward off rust quite well.

Would definately recommend this tool combo, for an EDC multitool.
