Product Description

The reality is you’re unlikely to be wrestling an alligator or slicing open a camel carcass anytime soon—things Bear Grylls has taken on—but we designed the Bear Grylls Ultra Compact Fixed Blade for just such occasions, as well as to meet more utilitarian demands of the backcountry. Combining Gerber’s decades of experience crafting tools and Bear’s survival knowledge, this is a smaller size of Bear’s favorite fixed blade knife, with an added paracord lanyard. The Ultra Compact Fixed Blade Knife is lightweight and easy to handle, yet able to perform like a pro when called into action in the woods. At 3.25 inches with full tang construction, the fine edge blade is plenty long, and stout enough to slice into a carcass, should the need arise. Even better, it’s small enough to strap to a boot or hang around your neck for easy access. The handle’s ergonomic shape and rubber-molded grip feel natural and fit securely in your hand. The knife’s balanced feel is matched by a well-placed bolster and textured thumb rise on the spine, adding grip security when your task requires pulling and pushing actions. Like the knife it holds, the Ultra Compact’s sheath is slim and multi-functional. The molded nylon sheath locks the knife securely into place for safekeeping on and off trail. It’s designed for easy access in a range of carry executions; strap it to your belt, wear it around your neck or secure it to your pack. The clip is reversible, and accommodates either tip-up or tip-down placement, and is removable for a minimalist approach, or to customize the attachment with webbing or cord.

Scrubbed my whole original review for this edit. I just want to say I have such a handsome and worthy collection of not super nice but nice knives. SRK san mai, gerber ultimate pro, moras, esee 4 in that neon green, a whole mess of condor knives which i enjoy, ranger stockman, swiss army, leatherman juice, wave and pro 300, the new gerber AO folder, and my wife had a benchmade osbourne until we sold it for lack of use.

Somehow or other, Anytime I receive a package in the mail, usually from amazon, but anything that requires a knife to open, for some reason I go right to this one. Somehow, as big of knives as i thought i could use for daily things, all i reach for is this one. Even for cutting food, fruit, no problem, it doesn't matter that the blade is thick, it works for precise cutting or just gouging open anything, and the blade material - i have had no complaints about as far as edge retention. This is somehow, against what i would have imagined, the knife i want to take everywhere with me. Talk about useful. And well made. And frankly this knife did not make a whole lot of sense to me (as far as usability) until I started using it. Tear a box to shreds or open it with sweet precision, then cut an artistic chunk of european cheese from a cheese block afterwards.

Ultra compact means, in this case, REALLY compact.
Nice thick blade, decently built, decent edge out of package, blah, blah, blah ... but it is a tiny knife.
It's 6 1/4 inches long from the tip to the far end, which makes it a pipsqueak compared to the Grylls Compact Fixed Blade, which is 7 3/4 inches long from tip to pommel end.
The blade on the Ultra is 2 3/4 inches long from tip to leading edge of the handle scales, and the sharpened section measures 2 3/8 inches from the tip.
Compare that to 3 3/16 inches for the sharpened and serrated section of the Compact Fixed.
Including the sheathes they come with, the Ultra is little more than an ounce lighter than the Compact Fixed.
The product description lists the Ultra's product dimensions as "3.5 x 5.5 x 9.5 inches" ... The card it comes in is more than 9 inches long ... maybe that's what they meant.
On the plus side, considering its length and blade thickness, it's gotta be practically unbreakable.
If you want something about the size of a small pocket knife (opened), yet is practically guaranteed not to break, the Ultra is for you.

I gave this knife five stars cause of its rugged desgin. Its made out of very thick steal with that being said i dont think you could break it under any ciramstances. Its appernt to me that this knife was made to skin animals. It has a 15 degree edge on it i own the smiths pro pull thru sharpner and it doesnt give a 15 degree option so i reshaped it at 16 degee's and its sharper than it came out of the box proving how vesatile the steel is. If you buy this knife know that the blade is probaly shorter that ur pocket knife but much more sturdier

Really tough for a small knife.
so yeah the coating does slowly wear away, but that's purely cosmetic.
i have seriously put this little knife through its paces and plenty of sharpens.
I have owned knives that hold an edge better but only marginally, and they
tended to crack with much abuse. This knife stays on my hip now and has
been through plenty to verify its durability and craftsmen ship. We even X-RAYED
the little sucker and found out that the scales are one solid plastic piece.
THE SCALES ARE NOT GLUE ON.

I got this knife for my wife who always uses my knife, but doesn't want to carry a knife. It is good to carry around your neck when you need to cut a rope or something small. The sheath holds the knife real well, even when you're ruffing it in the woods. It holds it's sharpness real well and seems pretty durable. Don't expect to cut down a tree with this thing. This makes a good second knife to have when you can't find your main knife. My wife likes it because it small and easy to carry. I changed the 550 cord to orange so she can find it easy in the woods and at night.

A couple weeks ago a dear friend purchased this knife and wouldn't shut up about how cool it was. I'm kind of a blade snob and I dismissed this product at first because I insisted that it was a "Bear Grylls" knife and you're just buying into brand hype and paying to carry the name. We finally got together over a weekend, I checked it out, it was love at first sight, and I immediately jumped on Amazon's iPhone app and bought it.
This knife is SO COOL!
The blade itself is PERFECTLY sized and weighted for an every-day carry.
It's NOT serrated, which makes re-sharpening about 100X simpler (Especially if you prefer to hand-sharpen your blades on a sharpening stone)
It's impressively sharp just out of the package, and I deliberately waited to write this review so I could take it to work and abuse it for two weeks to see how the edge held up. I must say that the steel is of EXCELLENT quality and I have no doubt that it'll hold its edge at least twice as long as the last knife I kept for an every day carry.
The shape of the blade tip is perfect for field-dressing/skinning and processing, and I'm definitely going to be bring this along with me this fall when deer season opens up.

As cool as the blade itself is, the sheath it comes with is equally awesome. I don't even know where to start bragging about it.
The sheath comes with a lanyard so the knife can be worn around your neck- I threw it away. The thought of wearing a knife-necklace just seems ridiculous to me. BUT it also has a clip so it can be clipped to your belt/pants/whatever. THAT'S WHERE THIS THING STARTS BLOWING MY MIND!
The clip on the sheath can be adjusted so you have the option to carry it with the blade handle UP or DOWN.
