About Gerber: A History of Innovation

Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that have contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939. It makes sense, really. An idea man gets the idea of a lifetime and turns it into a major outdoor brand--one that commands respect among knife lovers and knife makers alike. And now that same high regard is spreading in new directions, in the form of many outstanding products such as tools, personal L.E.D. lighting, and more.

GERBER SWAGGER AO

Assisted Opening Clip Knife

Being prepared for anything requires equal parts mental readiness and having the right tools at your disposal. The Swagger AO Knife is an everyday tactical blade to help complete the readiness equation. Like a favorite hand tool, the Swagger offers ease of use, stout construction and comfortable carry with a 3.25-inch blade and assisted opening convenience.

Smooth, One-Handed Opening:

A knife is only as good as it is easy to open, and Gerber’s proven Assisted Opening 2.0 technology delivers silky-smooth one-handed deployment, paired with a reliable plunge lock to keep the blade fixed where it belongs. Simply engage the thumb stud, and the mechanism works its magic to deploy the blade when you need it, be it to cut through a rope or respond to a critical situation.

Easy-to-Sharpen Drop Point:

Designed with problem solving in mind, the Swagger’s partial serrated blade adds utility. From carving to slicing to sawing, the drop point blade can do it all, with an easy-to-maintain edge as well.

Lightweight Composite Handle:

The G-10 composite handle sets a high bar for durability and all-conditions grip. It maintains a lightweight, comfortable and slim profile, so the Swagger comfortably disappears in your pocket or on your belt. There’s a lanyard hole at the pommel and a utilitarian pocket clip to keep your knife within easy reach.

Customer Reviews

Feels right in your hand and is pretty light weight.
Ryan M. Johnson
The action is so stiff that even with the "assist" mechanism it is impossible to open consistently with one hand.
John Adkins
The blade holds an edge as well as you would expect it to and then some, and the weight of the knife is perfect.

I've had this knife for about a year and I feel that i need to clarify why people have so much trouble with them. Simply put, the issue is the powder coating that is on both the blade and the spring arm that actuate the spring assisted action. When you first get the knife, the coating mashes together where those two parts meet and they create way too much friction until you open and close the knife several times, after which the powder coat wears off and the knife operates smoothly and as shown in the video. I will say that every other aspect of this knife is very good. The blade holds an edge as well as you would expect it to and then some, and the weight of the knife is perfect. Along with the slim profile, this knife is actually a very good EDC choice for those who need a light-to-mid-weight working knife and want a spring assisted action.
The fact that this knife does have this issue from the factory though does lose it a star, and i can understand how people who get this knife and don't very carefully examine it could think it doesn't work the way it should.

I agree that it loses a star for break in, but its a solid knife. I played with it, opening and closing, and it breaks in quick. I'd say after doing it for like 10minutes it opened easily. It got a little better after a couple days. It's light weight, but feels good. Maybe not über fancy, but I'd buy again.

My knife was a little stiff out of the package, but working it through the action a few times smoothed it out. It didn't take several hundred opens.

The spring on this knife is solid, and the handle is a little light, so it has a bit of a kick on open. Make sure to keep a firm grip and do not choke up on the handle. Once you're used to it, this is a fantastic one-handed opener. It looks great when closed & clipped to a pocket, and the composite handle provides good grip. The edge did need a bit of sharpening, but only a quick pass with a fine stone.

I like the size and style of this knife, but the opening mechanism is very stiff. Even after several days of open-close-repeat -- at least 400 times -- plus a couple drops of oil, I couldn't get it to open *easily* with one hand. So, I'm returning it in favor of the Gerber Outrigger XL, which did loosen up sufficiently after several days of use.

Sharp out the package. I don't see what the problem is with this knife that other reviewers were having. After opening and closing the knife several times the blade doesn't stick or have any trouble opening. I've had this knife for less than a day but used it to cut 550 cord and the fine edge does a hell of a job. The blade was very light to my surprise and I almost thought it was made of plastic at one point.

Overall, a great knife and for those who can't seem to break it in then perhaps you shouldn't be playing with knives.

I don't even want to give this one star. It is junk. I was hesitant to purchase a knife that I had not handled, and with just cause. The spring isn't strong enough to open the knife all the way to the locked position and the thumb pin is too small. The grip is also very poor. The product sucks. Dissaponting from a company that is known for quality products.

EDIT (1.5 months after purchase): After working with the knife a lot and breaking it in, it is more easy to open with one hand. It's still not as smooth opening as my previous Gerber AO knifes, but it's better than it was right out of the package. For that reason, I'm giving this product three stars.

I buy Gerber knives because of the "Assisted Open, 2.0" technology. When my last Gerber knife broke, I started shopping and ultimately picked this one. It was a mistake. Every other Gerber assisted opening knife I've purchased is easily opened with one hand; one push of the thumb (after unlocking) slides the knife open smooothly. That is not the case with this knife. It is difficult to open and definitely cannot be done with one hand, therefore the assisted opening technology is worthless. If you're purchasing this knife for the "AO" technology, don't buy it. Otherwise, it is an okay crafted knife.

Have had the knife for about a month and have really enjoyed it.
Great edge and enough serration for what I need it for (EDC)
the assisted opening was pretty tight at first and took some working in to feel like i wasn't ripping the skin off my thumb.
Great snap to the blade, lightweight and a thin profile.
I had an older Buck Whitaker that I loved (blade snapped) and this has done a great job filling in.
