Gerber 31-001901 Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro Fixed Blade, Survival Knife

Fine Edge Survival Fixed Blade

Ask Bear Grylls or anyone who has survived a serious scrape in the outdoors and they will say your brain is your most important survival tool. Your attitude, instincts and knowledge of the backcountry are what will keep you alive when everything else fails. But to put those instincts to work building a shelter, starting a fire or finding food, that brain needs a sharp, dependable knife.

The Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro Fixed Blade combines Gerber’s decades of knife making experience with Bear Grylls’s survival skills to create a survival knife that’s everything you need and nothing more. It leaves clever to the other gear in your backpack because clever usually means fancy features and moving parts that can bend, break, jam or get lost when you need them most.

Dependable Blade

The 4.8-inch fine edge, drop-point blade can go straight from hacking firewood to delicately filleting a trout. Its premium grade stainless steel construction means you’ll never see rust or corrosion as you pull it from its sheath. The blade will also keep its edge longer between sharpenings. With an updated full tang construction, you can be sure this is a tool that won’t fail you even after hard use.

Trusty Grip

At 13.7 ounces in weight and 10 inches in total length, this knife feels solid and balanced in the hand. A large, textured, rubberized handle gives you a solid grip in any condition and an oversized bolster where the handle meets the blade keeps your hand from slipping toward the blade as you lean into your cut.

Efficient Multi-tasker

Along with flawlessly performing all the essential duties of a knife, like slicing, chopping and filleting, this knife is packed with survival features. The stainless steel pommel at the base of the handle can serve as a hammer. With two holes in the handle, the knife can be lashed to a stick to create a spear. And the lanyard cord with emergency whistle helps you keep track of the knife and provides a loud emergency signal should potential rescuers be within earshot.

Durable Sheath

Just like the knife it protects, the sheath on the Ultimate Pro Fixed Blade reveals a few useful surprises in its military-grade, mildew-resistant package. A built-in fire starter rod sits snug in a watertight holder. Pair that with the cutout notch on the blade’s top edge and the ferrocerium rod produces a shower of fire-igniting sparks. A pull-through carbide sharpener is integrated into the sheath, so you can make sure your blade stays sharp. And, for refreshing your outdoor knowledge before things get dicey, a waterproof version of Bear’s “Priorities of Survival” Pocket Guide is stashed into the protective pocket on the back.

  • 4.8-inch fine edge, drop-point blade for smooth, versatile cuts
  • Full-tang, premium stainless steel construction for durability
  • Ergonomic, non-slip rubber grip for comfortable, precise handling
  • Lashing holes in handle
  • Military-grade, mildew-resistant nylon sheath
  • Pull-through carbide sharpener in sheath, for guaranteed sharpness
  • Built-in fire starter rod in watertight holder

For my Full Video Review and Demonstration of the Ultimate PRO Knife on YouTube, search "Ultimate Pro Best".

Well I'm pretty jazzed to get this review of the NEW Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate PRO Survival Knife out to you after a few weeks of research, use and testing. So today I'll dig in and look at this knife from just about every angle and see if this knife is garbage, good or anywhere close to great.

Okay... let's jump in!!!
___________

~THE BLADE...

Okay... Since a knife is only as good as it's blade... let's start here...

The Bear Grylls Ultimate PRO Knife is made out of 9Cr19MoV high carbon, stainless steel which is a nice upgrade from the Original Knife that is made out of 7Cr17MoV.

9Cr19MoV falls somewhere between 440B and 440C stainless steel in chemical composition, toughness and edge-holding ability. When compared to the 7Cr17MoV steel used in the Original Ultimate Survival knife... the PRO should be a bit tougher and hold an edge better.

~FULL TANG - YEAH!

Now the big, huge difference between these knives is the full tang construction of the Ultimate PRO knife vs. the 3/4 tang design on the Original Ultimate Survival knife.

Full tang means that the blade steel runs the full length of the knife from tip to butt.

Full tang construction is regarded by most experts as the strongest, most durable way to make a knife.

So to test the strength of this Ultimate PRO's steel, tang and pommel I woke up one morning with a crazy new knife test in my brain...

In my video review on YouTube (search "ultimate pro best") I decided to pound the knife into a hardwood log with a sledge hammer to see what happens...

I'll be honest with you...

I own two of the Bear Grylls Ultimate knives. As I posted in that particular review, they are great knives and I gave them 5 stars based upon the quality of the product, what the product included and the price point. And as I mentioned in that review, check the wholesale clubs. I bought both of mine at BJ's Wholesale Club. Regular price was $49 which included the BG's Ultimate and the orange basic survival kit. $49 is a fair price but I hit two separate sales and got the knife/emergency kit for $39 and $34 respectively. So this made a good deal into a great deal!

Same with the Ultimate Pro. I see prices normally around $79 which is a fair price, however, on a tip from a couple of posters I know I went to Rocky National which had a sale of $59. The sale was over but they honored the $59 price anyway so a big thumbs up for customer service at Rocky National. So like the Ultimate, the Ultimate Pro went from a good deal to a great deal!

So here are my thoughts on the Ultimate Pro. It is a definite step up from the Ultimate. The steel is stronger. It has full tang construction which is always a huge plus for knife strength especially if doing tasks such as batoning. As YT reviews show, the pommel will easily break through auto side glass (so does the Ultimate). The whistle is of a slightly different design and is suppose to be louder. If haven't compared them side by side but I'll trust them on that point. At any rate, having a whistle is just a very good idea. The addition of the ferro rod is a HUGE addition (as mentioned with the Ultimate) for a survival knife. If you've seen both the Ultimate and the Ultimate Pro you'll see the ferro rod is now right side up instead of upside down.

3 truths before we begin:

1) I am not a BG hater, nor am I one of his fans. I have seen exactly half of one show, once. His name, or abilities had zero bearing on this purchase.

2) I am not a woodsman. Simply put, I am a normal guy who realized that he was very dependant on technology, and possesed almost NO survival skills whatsoever. The more I began to learn regarding survival, the more I realized that the number one thing I would need is a cutting tool.

3) I am, however, a guitar player. I am well aware that you truly do get what you pay for when it comes to quality. I do not expect a 50 dollar guitar to feel, sound, or play as well as a $1,500 Gibson Les Paul.

I know that there are "higher ranked" knives, with "better" steel, if I was willing to pay 120-600 dollars a piece for them. I was not willing to do that, as I consider my potential risk level to be in a life threating situation relatively low. With that being said, I would rather have something and not need it, than need something, and not have it.

From my limited experience with the knife, (it literally just arrived last night) I can tell you the following:

It is heavier than I was expecting, and this was a nice, welcome surprise to me. It FEELS solid in my hand, and the grip is comfortable.

The edge arrived, out of the box, sharp. I did the fingernail scrape to get shavings, and it worked as well as I expected. Using the choil is slightly worrysome to me, as I was worried I would slip, and I could tell if I did, I would have an incredibly nasty cut on my finger. This nervousness will subside the more I use it though, obviously.

The sheath seems to be well designed. Yes, it's rubber and plastic, but it really isn't cheap feeling.
