Product Description

The Bear Grills Tinderbox, at 3 nimble ounces, is capable of initiating fire in even the most difficult scenarios. With a high grip rubber exterior and oblong shape for easy maintenance in the palm, this revolutionary tool possesses a grater-like steel cutting surface that creates fine tinder when applied to wood. The Tinderbox works as well with wet wood as with dry, because the grating surface simply shaves off the wet outer layers to expose the dry interior. After shaving wood into the Tinderbox, the cutter opens to allow easy removal of the tinder that's been created. At the point of prepping to build a fire, empty the dry tinder contents of the Tinderbox onto the desired surface of collected items to be burned. Do NOT start a fire in the Tinderbox. Place the plastic cover over the cutting surface when not in use to provide protection in a pocket or gear bag. The Tinderbox's attached magnifying glass can be used for a spark to ignite the gathered tinder if matches are wet, or worse, unavailable. An emergency signaling mirror is located on the bottom of the Tinderbox, because even getting a fire started doesn't equate to finding an escape route.

I absolutely love this product. It is a very cool and unique design, and does what it is supposed to do. It is light-weight, easy to carry, and many might be skeptical about this product not knowing whether or not it will work, but I have started many fires with tinder made from the tool. It is easy and quick to use, and ensures good firestarting tinder anywhere there is wood. The mirror on back is very nice and handy, and the magnifying glass works well for starting fires. The metal grater on the front is heavy duty and never gets dull. Overall 5/5 for usefulness, dependability, and productivity. It makes me much more confident just knowing I have a foolproof way to collect tinder. Even if the tinder is wet, keep it closed in the container, put the cap on, and you can let it dry out. A great product from Gerber and I would say one of the most useful products in the entire Bear Grylls range. Anyone who spends considerable amount of time needs to have one of these!

Very clever idea... But, it seems to only work well with softer woods that are nearly perfectly flat. I was able to use it on the split face of some wood but it still took a ton of effort for a little return of kindling.

I will give this Product three stars for its innovativeness. I just got it this week and tried it out today on chaga material. Basically it contains a mirror (why I don't understand), a magnifying glass that will easily light an amber in sufficient sunlight, a container for processed wood or tinder and of course the shredder. If picky, You might get a much cheaper version - and maybe more durable - using any tin container (that might also be used for making tar cloth) and a simple pencil sharpener.

It does what it's supposed to do. Starts fires well with the lens. I took stars off because the teeth of the grater actually dull very fast but even when dull they are usable but it takes a lot more effort. I wish the box wasn't made of plastic either and more of a metal. Took another star off because if you shave dust and put the cover over to keep the dust in and put it in your pocket expect dusty pockets. It doesn't contain very well

Received the tinder box today. I had some red oak boards ready to work on with it. Unboxed it, put it through some abusive paces on solid red oak for about 45 minutes. In that time, I gathered about a half gallon of fine red oak tinder. I fully expected a dull grating surface after the abuse. I was wrong. It's just as sharp as when I unboxed it. This is a winner!

This is a pretty cool little tool. The mag glass is alright. I have yet been able to start a fire with it and I'm in west Texas, hot sun all the time. The tinder shaver works very well though. Have only used soft woods to shave and once the box is full I can make 2-3 fires out of what is in it.

Very cool item! When this first came out, I thought it looked gimmicky and cheap, but was intrigued enough to try it out for myself. I couldn't have been more wrong. Yes, its made of plastic, but it doesn't feel cheap and the latch actually looks and feels pretty heavy duty. The tinderbox itself has a nice solid feel to it. Does it actually work? Yes! Testing it out in the Rocky Mtns of Colorado, I had no problem making tinder with the grater. The shavings store nicely in the tinderbox keeping your tinder dry, but keep in mind this is not a sealed container so some wood dust will escape dirtying your pocket or pack. Using the magnifying glass, I was able to start a fire every single time. Often in less than a minute. Obviously, it goes without saying that it will not work at night or on overcast days so be sure to keep your matches/lighter/firestarter with you. Lastly, the signaling mirror. Again, it seemed like a rather cheap feature of dubious value, tacked on just to give some added value. Standing in a valley, I had a friend climb up onto a ridge approx. 1 mile away and attempted to signal him with the mirror. It worked. He could see me flashing the mirror as clear as day.

Finals thoughts, I am genuinely surprised and impressed with the Bear Grylls Tinderbox. An item I thought would just be a cheap novelty turned into perhaps my favorite item in the entire Bear Grylls line. Its held up through a month of constant use and the blades on the grater are still sharp. This will have a permanent place in my pack. It really is that good.

This was supposed to be a good buy, and Gerber is a brand I trust. They do not rip you off with extremely high prices but they provide good quality that you can count on. This is the exception. The box is high quality and can be trusted, and the concept is great! But the blades are crap....rub this on any wood and you bend half of them on the first try. I know that we have hardwoods here in Idaho, but I should still be able to get shavings without destroying the device! Using my knife is much better.

Worse yet, I bought two....the other one will be given out as a gift to someone who doesn't want to actually use it....
