I bought this because the gerbers we get issued when we go over seas have the carbide cutter inserts and not the standard cutters. this version, has all the same tools, but a standard set of cutters, which work amazing, i was able to cut a penny in half with no problems. the carbide cutters broke at this attempt. It has all the tools i need as a soldier and it has done very nicely for me, the pliers deploy with a nice snap, one handed as advertised, the tools all come out very smoothly and the locking mechanism is very strong and easy to use, the knife blade serves it purpose and slices very well, although not razor sharp at first, with a very little amount of sharpening on my lansky sharpening system it now cuts like a razor (25 degrees) the other tools work very nicely, ive used the can opener quite a bit and it works like a dream. the file, although not the best out there works very well. the serrated blade isnt that sharp and kinda sucks...they should have switched it for a saw blade. the sheath it comes with is very high quality in my opinion, i like it alot better than the acu sheath i was issued. the pliar head is larger than most other multitools and opens very wide. yeah the handles come closer together than other tools, but this is alooot better when working in tight spaces because i can get a better grip on nuts or wires, and i have never had any trouble with it pinching my hands as others have complained about. they do kinda wobble if not fully closed, but if you are gripping something they are very tight and strong, better than the leatherman wave i used to own, as they were kinda small and the handles were very wide spaced when gripping something, it made it hard to have a tight grip.Read more ›

Generally speaking, I'm pretty happy with this multi-tool, though I'm not sure it's worthy of the Gerber name and price tag. It has a nice feel in the hand and an extremely solid construction, but I've come to expect a little better quality from Gerber than what they've delivered in this product.

First thing first, the picture provided in the Amazon description is not completely accurate. The picture depicts a pass-through slit on the blades and file which would allow you to grip from either side, but in reality it is a standard one-sided indentation found only on the outer edge. Not really an issue in overall functionality, but disappointing that you don't get exactly what is advertised.

Second, the straight blade is flat-out knicked up and unsusable out of the box. Absolutely no chance of getting a clean, straight cut without sharpening first. Again, not a complete loss of function (a quick sharpening will easily remedy the problem) but I've never had anything less than a perfect edge on any Gerber that I've ever bought in the past.

Last, the finish is a complete disappointment for the Gerber brand. With a potentional need to carry in a deployed environment, the matte black finish is certainly a plus. However, it's completely covered in minor scratches, and so dirty and unfinished that it will completely coat your hands with a black film the first time you handle it. That, combined with the damaged straight blade, conveyed to me that these are just mass-produced and thrown around in bins. No care seemed to be taken to ensure a quality finished product is delivered to the customer, and there doesn't seem to be any concern that you have to give these a full cleaning and sharpening yourself to bring them up to their potential.

Got mine in the mail today.

POSITIVES: It feels solid and weighty in the hand, which is a good thing. The quick-deploy pliers take a bit of getting used to, but I got the hang it it quickly. The pliers provide a better grip than I thought they would (though they wobble a bit because of the sliding mechanism). The locking mechanism holds the extra tools in place very well.

NEGATIVES: Fresh from the box, the straight blade is nicked up and needs sharpening. It's not completely unusable, but a new tool shouldn't have to be prepared before first use. Also, expect the black matte finish to rub off on your hands the first several times you use it. Your hands will be filthy when you're done. Finally, mine already had scratches when I pulled it out of the box. That's not a major problem, as the tool will be beaten up when used anyway, but I'd prefer to do that myself.

Overall, still a solid tool that I'd recommend with a few minor reservations.

I'm going to cut right to the chase on the Gerber 600 and say you'll really like this multi-tool if you understand it's design and accept it for what is.There is only two things that truly prevent me from giving the Gerber 600 five-stars and saying it's better than a Leatherman,so let's get to the review...

*Body Design:
I've been carrying a Gerber 600 in my pocket on the job for a little over a decade and with the handles closed it's not as compact as a Leatherman but it's not exactly bulky either. It doesn't have a fat body and it's sleek in form so except for the plier tips sticking up carry it however you wish.Even after all these years I still love the look of this multi-tool for one firm reason:the Gerber 600 looks industrial and more like a piece of hardware it just says 'use me to fix things' and not surprising it was a popular tool for technicians of all kinds.

*Snap-Out Pliers/Wire Cutters:
The feature on this multi-tool that really seals the deal...one handed access to your pliers. The newer models like the Diesel and Flik have varying performance on the plier sccess and nothing beats the 600 model. The Diesel does function one-handedly but it was made with different specs/parts and built a little tougher so it's not as smooth(takes a few shakes snapping out). The Gerber Flik is smooth sliding out but snapping out?the physical motion will throw one or more of the external blades out some. Not to veer off topic but I'd say expect that to happen from a Leatherman OHT(which hopes to steal Gerber's thunder)if you use the buttons directly it's fine but external access tools and blades combined with wrist action plier access isn't a good combination.
