Gerber GDC Hook Knife
Daily Carry Hook Knife
No one doubts keys’ usefulness--they start cars, get you in and out of places and keep your stuff, well, yours. But to really elevate their role, the Gerber Daily Carry Hook Knife adds lifesaving potential, in the form of a reliable, easy-to-access blade that’s always in arm’s reach.
A True Utility Blade:
The idea behind this 2-inch stainless steel hook blade is simple: create an ultra-stealthy knife that lives on a keychain and can be used to quickly cut yourself out of a piece of clothing, seatbelt or other safety strap, should you ever get stuck in a tight spot. You’ll also find lots of ways to use the knife for many of life’s little non-emergencies. At home, put it to use opening a box or an envelope. Out in the field it’s great for small tasks like cutting fishing line, trimming a tarp or opening a package of freeze-dried food.
A Safe Grip:
Wrap your finger around the ring, press your thumb against the thumb grip and you’ve got a solid hold that won’t budge when you put a bit of power behind a cut. When you’re done, the blade snaps back into its sturdy, safe sheath.

I am a rope rigger. I tie people and things up on a regular basis. I use everything many varying types and sizes, so I always, ALWAYS have an emergency cutting tool on me in the unlikely event I ever have to cut someone/something free. In addition to this, I am an avid climber and hiker. A reliable rescue tool is always on me there too. To be honest, I always have one wherever I go.
That being said, I have about 25 different models of hook/rescue knives. I generally don't like it being attached to my knife as I'm picky about my knives. This is honestly my favorite pick for multiple reasons. I like the grip, the ring circumference is not too small to choke my finger nor too big that it's awkward to hold. The sheath grabs well enough that it won't fall off, but not so hard that I worry it wont come off immediately upon my needing it.
Analysis: I test every hook I get on multiple ropes, wires and cables prior to carrying it. This tool has absolutely no problem getting through hemp, jute, bamboo, and most synthetic ropes of 10-11mm and smaller. With a small twist/wiggle, it can get through up to 18mm (I only tested hemp at this size) in a little over a second. This blade also has NO problem going through a seat belt. I also tested this on 8mm Kevlar tubing with great success. Lastly, I tested it on 1/8" galvanized steel cable. This proved difficult, but after about 10 seconds of strenuous effort (with 50lb tension) I was able to cut the cable. The hook was no longer sharp, but nice to know it could be used for that in an emergency.
Pros: Very compact, yet fits hand nicely.Read more ›
I just received mine, and-- without spending much time with it-- I can already tell what the tragic flaw of the product is to hinder it from any possibility of it being a multi-use tool/knife. Basically, the nub that sticks out over where the blade is is quite thick (as thick as the rest of the product), and doesn't have sloped edges . That keeps it from slipping easily between layers of cardboard to cut through tape on a package, or anything else for that matter.
(see my uploaded images to better understand this product, and see the thickness of it)
As an example, I just tried to open another Amazon package with it and it was very frustrating. I had to first lift the cardboard a little just to stick the thick hook knife between to cut the tape. It would have been faster using any one of the keys on my keyring as opposed to the GDC Hook Knife.
The fix for this is so simple it's stupid. I honestly cannot believe that this product made it to market without it:
Grind down, or at least smooth the edges of the "nub" to make it easy to slip under/between things.
If some real thought had been put into this product beyond design (which I must comment on-- it's a great looking tool, despite its problems), that nub might even be a sharpened edge. It goes into a hard and secure plastic sheath when you're not using it... So why not have it be a useful multi-tool?Read more ›

Doesn't unsheath as smoothly as you might like but it's a very small and otherwise well designed. If you open a lot of packages it would be a nice zipper pull.Published 3 days ago by A.L.

Great little tool, lousy retention clip. Knife went missing after a month of being on my keychain. Can't throw away the retention piece though, because then I'll find the knife.Published 23 days ago by Adam Turick
