Product Description

Gerber Dime multi-tool. Gerber took the standard keychain multi-tool and made it better. In addition to stainless steel pliers, wire cutters, a fine edge blade, spring-loaded scissors, flathead screwdriver, crosshead driver, tweezers and file, the Dime includes a unique blade designed to safely cut and score plastic packaging and a bottle opener that is exposed even when the tool is closed. Compact and lightweight, the Dime is the most valuable change you'll find in your pocket. Imported.

If you're looking at the Dime you're probably also looking at the Leatherman Squirt PS4. The Squirt has better fit and finish, but it also costs more. I've always been curious about the Dime and when REI had it for under $14, I thought I'd pick it up to see if it was worth it; alas no. For this price you'd expect a few compromises. The tools are hard to deploy, but some oil and your willingness to open and close them a few dozen times will make the action better. The file is, as mentioned by many reviewers, all but worthless. You won't be able to file your nails with it. Considering the cost, I could live with those negatives. The deal breaker was when I was trying to use the wire cutters to snip thin cable ties. Not only would they not cut, it actually caused the pliers to develop side to side play. Maybe I got a dud, maybe your luck will be better, but my recommendation is to spend a couple of extra bucks and get the PS4.

This is a great little multi-tool! I'm not a big fan of Gerber pocket knives, I usually find their quality lacking (I am somewhat of a knife collector) but this little guy had all the tools I wanted in a nice small package perfect for EDC on my keychain. I was surprised by the quality.

Pros:
- Pliers work great and the tip is kind of sharp and meet up perfectly. The spring action is great. For pliers of their size they work great.
- Scissors are sharp and don't have the axis wobble I've found on similar tiny scissors.
- Fixed exterior bottle opener is great. Its nice and wide and you never have to use it twice. I've always hated the fold out bottle openers, because they take too long to deploy when you got a cold one in your hands and your thirsty ;).
- Knife is good. Comes double ground which is better than the grind Leatherman puts on their small knifes, but it wasnt particularly sharp out the box. Also I don't like how the tip is shaped. Short and stubby, not pointy at all. You cant use it to pick at small things, but I guess it prevents you from breaking the tip on a toll that small.

Cons
- File. The file on the sides of the screwdriver is so tiny it useless. I can barely fit my nail on it, much less move it back and forth to actually file it. Completely useless.
- The package opener I also found redundant because I have a knife. Why do I need a package opener when i have a knife?!?
- Tweezers seemed like a good idea but they are very thin and flimsy. The tip of the pliers are sharp and pointy enough to do anything these tweezers can so again they are kinda redundant.

Overall still a great little tool to have on the keychain, when I need a tool in a pinch. This replaced a Leatherman Micro because it has more useful tools.

Multi-tools somehow became a bit of a collection item for me. Since I didn't feel like it was a good idea to have my big tools in my pocket at work (office), I wanted something smaller. I usually had the Swiss keychain ones, but wanted to have pliers. For a keychain tool this is definitely the optimum I've seen so far in number of tools.

What I like:
- The pliers are surprisingly sturdy for something this small
- Number of tools/uses
- Tools are accessible without opening the pliers
- Has Tweezers
- Black paint seems to stick pretty well

What I don't like:
- I'm not a big fan of the Gerber non-pointy knife
- The box-opener is a waste of space and weight; doesn't really add anything over the knife
- The Tweezers seems sturdy, but don't work well (Can't get splinters out with them, which is the only use I have for it

I like it for now, but will probably switch back to a normal (small but full size) tool in my pocket once I find one with a 'legal blade'

I love this little tool mainly because of the plyers. I did end up bending one of the pieces because I guess I put to much force on it. For small nuts and bolts it works well. I would recommend something heavier if you really have to break something loose. Knife is very sharp and box opener works nicely.

Mine does not have a blade on the retail package opener, but when I checked the photos in the description there is. Did i received a defective one?

I carry these everywhere i go and i don't know how i got through life before i bought them. It's meant for little jobs and I've been putting it though h3ll these last couple of months and it's still workin fine. the pliers now have a little play in them for side to side, but i've also been pretty rough on them. also, when you open them the sides rub and takes off the finish and some of the metal but doesn't affect function. they are the perfect size for my pocket, small and light weight. GREAT INVESTMENT!!!

Nice and compact, tools are useful except for maybe the file. Best feature in my opinion is the package opener. Works great for blister packs and cutting tape on boxes. Safer than a knife and less chance of damaging the merchandice in side. All the other tools are pretty standard stuff.

I bought this because I currently own a Leatherman Squirt Ps4 and things like the file and blade feel fragile on it so I was looking for something sturdier. Here is how the Dime compares:

Pliers - I like the spring loaded feature but don't really feel it is needed given the weight pliers of this size can handle. I feel like the Leatherman needle nose pliers have a finer grip but that could just be in my head.

File - I love the file tool and this seriously let me down. The fine side is largely blocked by the keychain ring and the coarse side is very small as the file is added to a half sized screwdriver tool and both are not very abrasive (the coarse one might as well not even be there and the fine one is blocked so it is super annoying to use).

Package opener - The squirt ps4 does not have one at all, and it is useful for opening packages (especially things right up against the box/envelope/plastic blister packages) however I would much rather have the leatherman full sized diamond file which can even put an alright edge on a knife in the field.

Scissors - I have had leatherman scissors have plastic food bags (I work in a bakery so I open a lot of them and the full sized scissors are always missing) have the plastic go sideways on me between the blades and not cut. The gerber scissors do not get that problem but are not as sharp.

Bottle opener - The typical leatherman foldout bottle opener works fine imo and the gerber one just stick out 24/7, adds a bit of clutter/weight, and largely just bugs me because it is always there, in the way.

Tweezers - this is such a welcome addition that I frankly have no clue why leatherman does not include. That being said they are not very good but better than nothing.
