5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect tool for firefighter/paramedic
I am a career firefighter/paramedic with seven years on the job. I have already used the knife several times on EMS calls. Four times I have used the oxygen wrench (we all know how the black tabs seem to get lost), and I have used the Zuess tool (belt cutter) and window punch on a couple of MVA's with extrication. Also used it on several trauma patients to expose them...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Knife - But Gerber Has Made It Better Since I Bought Mine
Bought this knife for my sone due to being a fireman. The knife is heavy and easy to use, but the blade needs to have a full "sharp edge" to it. The point of the knife is not useable to open bags, slit paper, and puncture things (the most common use of a knife). Since buying this knife, I see where Gerber has made some changes and offers the same knife with a full...

4.0 out of 5 stars Gerber 22-41534 Hinderer Rescue Knife with Serrated Edge and Sheath, October 17, 2007
This review is from: Gerber Hinderer Rescue Knife with Serrated Edge and Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this knife for my professional fire fighter husband. He says, "It's a little big, but all the nice little design features are cool." He likes the built in oxygen tank tool.

The additional bonus wrench tools were weird and not very useful, a strange thing to add in with this knife.

I am a firefighter in new jersey and bought this to have a blade in my turnout coat. The seatbelt/clothing cutter is a real nice addition as is the tank valve adapter, although it cannot go full turn because it hits the tank. The blades are super sharp and do not snag and tear, they go right through whatever your cutting. The glass punch has been used a few times and works really well with minimal effort. I have even started carrying it while i am driving instead of leaving it in my gear. Its nice to have something in your own vehicle that you can use in case you come across a mva or have to get yourself out. If you are a firefighter, emt, police officer, or other emergency personell you would be crazy not to own a knife like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paramedic who LOVES this knife!, July 29, 2010

I have to say this knife has truly saved some lives, patient trapped in a car with all electronics down, busted the window no problem with no effort, cut the seat belt so fast, with patient in no harm of getting cut with the awesome belt cutter. I have to say, I love this knife. The blade is still sharp after a year and a half of use. I carry this knife EVERYWHERE I go just in case of anything, because you never know what can happen. The oxygen tank valve opener is such a great feature because we have tons of tanks without the twist knob and this knife, AGAIN, comes in great handy. Another thing people miss is the blunt tip of the knife, great for prying open doors and locks and even using as a flat head screwdriver. BEST KNIFE AROUND FOR ANY EMS WORKER. Buy one now and you will have a future tool for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well made and very functional knife, July 3, 2009
This review is from: Gerber Hinderer Rescue Knife with Serrated Edge and Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have not had a chance to use this knife on a call yet, but my initial tests were very favorable. Don't mistake that this is a general pupose knife with a few rescue features - it is really a rescue oriented knife.

One feature that was not clear from any product info is that the front non-serrated portion of the blade is NOT sharpened. This makes it much safer from cutting clothes off of patients. The knife has a rounded point, followed by the non-sharp smooth edge (about 3/4") That will allow you to safely put the knife (edge side toward you, not the patient) and cut jeans, coats or probably any other clothing including leather (have not tested on leathers yet, but the serrated edge is extremely effective on other heavy fabrics, rope and webbing) well.

The hook cutter edge works great on webbing and also canvas once you get past the hemmed edge. You will probably need the knife edge to get past jean hems. I would like to see the hook with a bit larger opening to make this easier. One started (jeans and canvas test) it was like having a zipper where there was none. It sliced very fast and clean. On 1" webbing it was like using a hot knife - really fast. It seems to be very safe for the patient as well - I did not make any marks on the test surface underneath the jeans and canvas as the hook design is smooth on the outside (patient side).

A well designed knife - and I have used a bunch of others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Duty Solid Tool, January 8, 2009

The Hinderer is a heavy duty, large knife. While you probably won't want to carry it at all times (unless you're an EMT or fireman), it's a solid tool. Just one word of warning...the seatbelt cutter is razor sharp and unguarded (one bloody finger later)! Accessory took kit is a nice touch. I keep mine in the center console of my Xterra.

Designed with firemen and rescue workers particularly in mind, the knife really seems "well thought out." As someone preparing for a career in law enforcement, I figured this tool could come in handy.

The seat-belt/clothing cutter can be a little hard to access, but it works well. The blade opens relatively easily even with gloves thanks to a large thumbstud. The ability to pry with the tip of the "blade" and not have to worry about it breaking has been a great plus for me. It's my go-to mini pry-bar for any task. The glass breaker on the rear is another reason that I always carry this tool while in the car.

The oxygen wrench on the back of the handle is, purportedly, indispensable to firemen and paramedics. Although I haven't used most of the functions this tool offers, it is certainly well-built.

Expect a large-sized and heavy tool. The sheath has a very, very tight fit; so much so, that I do not use the sheath - only the pocket clip. It also comes with some simple screwdriver-like tools, but my SAK takes care of those tasks for the most part.

All in all, a good buy when I bought it... it was cheaper on Amazon then. Look around for better prices. Also, make sure you consider Victorinox's Rescue Tool... it's the main competitor with the Gerber Hinderer.

The point of the knife is not useable to open bags, slit paper, and puncture things (the most common use of a knife). I like Gerber brand knives and have never had a problem with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well made knife, February 9, 2010

This review is from: Gerber Hinderer Rescue Knife with Serrated Edge and Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'm not a firefighter, EMT, paramedic, etc., nor have I had occasion to cut any seatbelts, or break any tempered glass. But I like this knife as a general purpose knife. the serrated blade is sharp, and very, very thick. The knife overall feels very tough; I wouldn't hesitate to pry and such with it. I prefer the blunt tip, because I don't generally have cause to stab things. Having the strap cutter and glass breaker, though, are nice for those of us who are not rescue pros, because ya never know ...

I wish that I had had this knife back when I was diving a lot, particularly for freshwater diving. The seatbelt cutter looks like it would be ideal for cutting line, and wouldn't require unfolding the knife, plus the blunt tip blade would be less likely to puncture a BC or PFD.

Overall, this is an extremely solid, durable, tough knife, with some extras.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Simple and Well Built Knife, August 21, 2009
This review is from: Gerber Hinderer Rescue Knife with Serrated Edge and Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a quality knife. I have used it as a general purpose knife and it has performed exceptionally well. I have not used it during any rescues but have used it during motor vehicle accident training and it was great. The seat belt cutter worked well enough as did the glass breaker. I was able to open the knife and seat belt cutter with structural gloves on in the rain with no difficulty. I doubt I would use the accessory tools during an emergency but they are nice to have and I have used them. The oxygen wrench is not compatible with our tanks but I did not buy the knife for that reason. Other reviewers have commented that the sheath is too tight but I was able to stretch it out and I have had no difficulties with it.
