To begin with, this product was supplied to me by a large local sporting good chain for the express purpose of writing a review for their in-house publication and catalog. I was not paid, other than receiving a free flashlight and I must add that after the fortune I spend at their establishment each year, it is about time I received a freebie...I owe them nothing...if anything, they owe me. Now that being said:

I am a big Gerber fan. To be quite frank, I have never owned used or met a Gerber product that I did not love. I have been using their tools, knives, etc. for years and have never been disappointed once. This Gerber 22-80147 Omnivore 50-Lumens Flashlight was no exception, for the most part...more about that later.

I am one of those people who have boxes and packages of batteries stashed all over the place. I have them in the house, barn, storage sheds and my truck. For some reason though, no matter what size battery I need at any given time, it is the very one that I do not have on hand! Go figure. Over the years I have become convinced that there is some Universal Mystic Law involved here; much like when you do laundry and one sock always seems to disappear in to some black hole, never to be seen again. Anyway, batteries have always been a problem for me and this Omnivor Technology seems to be a gift from the flashlight Gods for people like me.

This unit uses AAA, AA or CR123 batteries and not even I can be out of all three at the same time. I did use all of these different sizes in my test and all three worked out quite well. I did not have trouble seating any of them; a problem I have had with a couple of the other lights of this ilk. I was able to get about three and one half hours continual use out of each.

I had to wait quite a while to get this light as it seemed to be in short supply. However, it was a purchase that appealed to my multitasking desires so it was worth the wait. The idea of a flashlight that could use multiple battery types was incredibly attractive. However, there are some oddities with this gadget.

The most irritating are the directions on the package itself. Actually directions implies more than one. There is actually only one direction: Insert battery positive end first into the light. One small problem: It's wrong. I first tried the battery that came with the light and it didn't work. I figured maybe it was a dud, then tried a CR123 I had and it also didn't work. I was about to return it when I came back to Amazon and read another review that found the battery needed to be reversed from the directions and then it would function. I tried that and it worked. But seriously, that's a fairly bad mistake.

While I can't speak for other folks, my light did not come with 2AA batteries as listed in the product details. It came with only one. Amazon, should correct that discrepancy in the listing.

Finally, in order to have the option for three battery types the light's circumference is much wider than I anticipated. It's one inch in diameter, which may not seem like much but it's noticeable. I'm the first to admit I'm not an engineer so perhaps this is unavoidable.

Short Version
Pros:
Uses Multiple Battery Types

Cons:
Incorrect directions
Incorrect Amazon listing

Unexpected:
Larger diameter than expected

After all this, I'm still giving it four stars. Why? It uses all of the listed battery types, the directions and listing are annoying but not deal breakers. And I'm willing to give the designers the benefit of the doubt for the size.

I've had this flash light for a couple years now. For the most part of those two years it has been sitting in my junk drawer; for two reasons, first, the on/off switch is super sensitive. If it's in your pocket, backpack, or in the included sheath, it accidentally turns on and your battery rapidly dies. And second, it is very easy to drop, and 9 out of 10 times it drops onto the on/off switch, then turns on at inopportune times. There is no tactical advantage to this light. It is too easy to turn on when you'd rather not and it is difficult to operate one handed.

For a $50 flashlight, I expected more than just the Gerber name. Essentially this product is a vehicle for battery sellers and manufacturers. It's a good thing that three types of batteries fit into it because you're going to need them.

Just today I fixed the sensitive switch with a rubber band, by tying it around and filling in the gap of the switch. So now, my fifty dollar problem has a penny solution. Rubber bands are worth their weight in gold. Still not sure about this light.

I would recommend one that cost less.

I liked the idea of this flashlight's versatility in using any of the usual small batteries. The directions clearly show the battery is to be inserted in the light housing with the positive terminal first. Well, it won't work that way and I was getting ready to return it when I turned the battery around and the light came on. I am slightly incredulous that they ship product with directions that are that simple and that wrong. The light works now but I am disappointed with the feel of the switch. This is clearly not that durable a flashlight. I really wish Amazon would make it easy to learn where items like this are manufactured. I remember when Gerber was a quality American manufacturer. I have a Gerber knife in my pocket right now that is 30 years old and has seen much use. Keep shopping, spend a few more bucks, buy American.
