    4.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, March 5, 1999

This book is exactly what my sister and I have been looking for. We read other books, but they weren't specific on how to care for gerbils, just the same-old-same-old clean it often routine. We love the book; it made our gerbil caring so much easier and fun!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gerbil Book, February 11, 2005
    A Kid's Review
This review is from: Gerbils (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I got this book from the library and I read part of it. I have two gerbils. Their names are Acorn and Daisy. I had read another book about gerbils that said that they sleep at night but this book said they like to stay up around midnight. This book is right. When my gerbils were in my room they ran on their wheels and kept me up at about that time. I liked a picture of gerbils in tubes in this book. It showed a gerbil jumping into a tube. I learned that you are supposed to let your gerbils run around in a room about three times a week. I hadn't been doing that. Now we let them loose in the bathroom sometimes and on the table in the basement. I also liked the pictures of different colors of gerbils. I didn't know there were black and white spotted gerbils until I read this.

2.0 out of 5 stars To little information, January 27, 2006
    By
This review is from: Gerbils (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I had a few gerbils as a kid, and came back to them as an adult. I was not the best pet owner as a child, and as an adult I wanted to do better, and make sure the gerbils I had were as happy as they could be. My husband and I looked in bookstores and pet stores and this was the only book we found, much to our disappointment. This book is at best a good introduction to gerbils, and has some basic care requirements that most people won't know. However, beyond the very basics I've found this book to be little help at all. The health information has failed to provide critical information every time we`ve needed it, and I've lost 3 gerbils in the past two years. (Store bought gerbils. Now I go to a reputable breeder to avoid the genetic defects.) The food information is not the best either, being vague and very general, and has left my husband and I confused on several points.

If you need a book to introduce your child to pet care, or if you just want the basics on gerbils yourself, this book is fine. If you're an adult wanting to adopt and take care of gerbils well, I suggest you look elsewhere. (The American Gerbil Society recommends Gerbils: The Complete Guide to Gerbil Care ) If you want to breed, for-the-love-of-God why are you looking at this book?
