Janet A. Hulme has been a physical therapist for over three decades. She started writing about health in the mid 1990s. The book has 14 chapters: 1. common Myths and Mysteries, 2. anatomy/Physiology for the Clinician and Client, 3. Types and Causes of Urinary Incontinence, 4. Fecal Incontinence/

Constipation, 5. Beyond Kegels Exercises and Physiologic Quieting, 6. Biofeedback: How Can itHelp with Exxercises for Incontinence/ 7. Life Style Changes for Continence, 8. What medications Can help? 9. confident and Continent Prevention Program, 10. The Active Elderly at Home and Independent, 11. The Frail Elderly, 12. Total Hip Replacement, hip Fracture, and Incontinence, 13. For Men Only, and 14. Protective Products for Incontinence. The book ends with a list of resources, references, and a glossary.

She describes the bladder as a balloon sitting in a hammock and describes exercises to lift the perineal muscles and close the bladder outlet to keep people dry. She presents an excellent discussion of nutritional recommendations, exercise program, diaphragmatic breathing, hand warming, body/mind quieting and urinary and bowel habits. The function, effect and examples of medications are presented. The book is illustrated to show how to do beyond Kegel exercises by rolling the knees out and back, using a Kegelband and Kegelball. The book is in large type with bolded topics. There are numbered and bulleted lists and helpful figures. Examples of weekly bladder/bowel record, bladder/bowel monitoring record, incontinence master assessment/intervention form, recommendations for incontinence intervention program, bladder/bowel intervention protocol, results summary bladder bowel training, and results summary-problem list are presented. This book is packed with useful information for people with bowel and bladder problems and the professionals who try to help them.
