maddenningly interesting and disappointing at the same time, November 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: German Aircraft Industry and Production: 1933-1945 (Hardcover)
This book is essential for anybody with an interest in the history of WWII war industry, in particular the german aircraft and aeroengine industry. At the same time, however, its faults are so glaring that it cannot be reccommended without reservation. One must buy it knowing that it is very sloppily edited, with poor text, plenty of entirely unrrelated photographs, reproductions of documents with the sole purpose of showing that the authors had original documents in their hands . Essentially, the main problem is that the authors did not know how to collate the material the had in their hands, specially in the notoriously difficult field of ascertaining aircraft production for the RLM, whose files where destroyed at the end of the war. A more academic approach would also be worthwhile, given the difficulties just mentioned. There isn't a single source mentioned for any information.
However, its detailed coverage of every manufacturer (and of every factory sometimes) is, in itself, enough to make it indispensable, until someone comes out with a more critically minded work.

German apologist garbage, March 18, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: German Aircraft Industry and Production: 1933-1945 (Hardcover)
This book is tainted with blatant german apologist historical revision. There is nothing new in that the german aircraft industry was not well coordinated, lacked sufficient resources to wage war against Britain, the US and USSR, although the authors would have you think that they have unearthed this great secret.
I found it insulting to read that the germans did not start WWII, the british & french did. I guess a 'little' thing like the invasion of Poland isnt a cause of war?
In addition to the above, I was completely turned off by the smug, superior attitude of these authors who have dismissed virtually every other work on aviation that has come before them. They surely do have strong arm muscles from patting themselves on the back.
The material presented is often confusing. I found it difficult to interpert the information on number of planes manufactured, for example.
This is one of the few books that I have ever returned. I do not recommend purchase of this book for whatever reason.
