Although the holiday subject matter, German Christmas traditions, and favorable reviews on Amazon persuaded me into purchasing this slim volume, I must admit I am very disappointed in this book, which consists of approximately twenty-three pages on the German traditions regarding advent and the Christmas season, approximately nine pages on very basic German Christmas cookie recipes, and about four pages providing the German lyrics of three popular Christmas songs. At $9.95, this book is overpriced!

Christmas has lost most of its true traditions due to the consumerism transformation in the US. This book explores the Christmas traditions of a country that is still quite traditional, Germany.

The book goes through the all the German Christmas traditions and takes you to another world where a traditional Christmas is still alive and well. I had been to German Christmas markets before, but there were certainly things in this book that I didn't know about! For example, Barbarazweig (the tradition of bringing in a special branch from a tree to bloom on Christmas Eve).

It was fun to learn what German Christmas traditions are. I think it would also be fun to read this with a kids and go through the traditions (like baking the cookies).

I was thrilled to read through this book, because I grew up with all these German Christmas traditions. It contains comprehensive information on how Christmas is celebrated in Germany. From Advent to St. Nicholas Day to Christmas Eve to the famous German Christmas Markets to Christmas Carols, all German traditions are explained. Finally, there are recipes of the most famous Christmas cookies. Try them - they taste yummy!
