Book Description

January 1, 2005 Elite (Book 118)
This first of two studies examines the careers and illustrates the appearance and uniforms of 19 of the German Army’s leading field commanders in World War II (1939-1945). Their service covers the whole arc of that army’s wartime experience, from stunning success in 1939–41, through the hugely costly middle years on the Russian Front to the stubborn defensive fighting in both East and West in 1943–45. Also included are five more junior unit commanders chosen because their service typifies the achievements of combat leaders in regimental and battalion commands. The colour portraits are in the uniquely meticulous style of the respected World War II illustrator Malcolm McGregor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Describes German Commanders and Uniforms, January 25, 2012

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this, and several others in the series, for my 13-year-old son. He loves history and is especially interested in WWII. I am always a bit cautious/concerned when purchasing war books because of his age. I was particularly concerned about this book (and the others in the series). I did not know what they would say about these war heroes/criminals. I did not want a book that glorified them. Nor did I want a book that desecrated them. What I want is for my son to know that Hitler/the Nazis were horrible and there is no excuse for what happened. Ever. But I also want him to know that not all Germans were Nazis (my mom, his grandmother, grew up in Austria during WWII- her 16-year-old brother was FORCED into serving) and that in war, as in life, war crimes and heroics is a matter of perspective. This book simply lists the different commanders and describes what they did before, during and after the war. There are photos of many of the commanders. There is also a section of illustrations, much like those on the cover, of the various uniforms, etc. This book does not go into wrong or right, good or bad. It is simply a factual accounting of who the German WWII commanders were, and what the uniforms looked like.
