Several of the recipes are suspect,

I've tried several recipes and three of them had the wrong ingredients or the wrong quantity. I don't know about all the recipes because I will no longer use this book. The recipes for Marzipan - needs egg whites (492), Bavarian Bread Dumplings - needs flour (191), and spazle-needs more liquid or less flour (196) are all wrong. Becareful!

Ich verstehe nicht.,

This cookbook is not fully translated. There are ingredients and measurements that are nearly impossible for Americans to find or understand. Some recipes I tried did not even turn out right or if they did, it was a shame because they were terrible. This cookbook is good for reference and maybe comparisons with other recipes, but that is all.

Not as bad as others make it out to be.,

I am less suspect of this book now that I live in Germany. The recipes are very good and quite authentic; however you MUST read them all the way through BEFORE beginning the cooking process! The translation is faulty in regards to the wording and order in which the cooking of items should be completed.Substitutions are easily found in America for listed items, but you must have a previous knowledge of what the item actually IS in Germany, and a fairly good common sense knowledge of the kitchen to follow the "out of order" instructions. If you want truly authentic recipies though, it is a good book.

I've cooked several recipes from the German Cookery cookbook. Yes, some of the writing is not as clear as it should be, but an experienced cook should be able to use the recipes without too many problems.I've made the Tomato Sauce (Tomatensauce #284) and was wondering about the water to thin the sauce. I finally figured it out but the recipe was not clear. The Onion Butter (Zweibelbutter #296) is excellent over mashed potatoes. The Stuffed Peppers (Gefulter Paprika) are excellent and one of the tastiest recipes for Stuffed Peppers I've ever made. And the Young Vegetables (Junges Gemuse #215) are excellent. No complaints and the recipes are tasty.

'Antique' style cook book,

After reading several of the reviews, I want to add that "German Cookery" is something of a modern classic of German cuisine. It was copyrighted in 1955, and written much like many homey books of that era, complete with errors and omissions. And although annoying to some, of course it has recipes for lots of starches and all parts of the cow, pig and some strange river fish, as in that post-world war II decade of shortages, every part of the animal was put to good use twice over. The housewifey thrift and recipe brevity is part of the charm of the book. It also reminds me a lot of "German Cookery for the English Kitchen" and "German Cookery for the American Kitchen" (published in the 1910s)and I wonder if it isn't a revision of those truly old books. I like to page thru Schuler for inspirations and a little bit of old time reverie. Who can't like a book that has a recipe for 'Apples in Nightgowns'? I've been making that one for 25 years and my kids love it if only for its name!

Short and to the point,

I actually like this book for the fact that it gives you a lot of recipes in a brief and condensed style. I am actually from Germany and appreciate how the author describes the recipes and immediately get the picture when I read the recipe. Some cookbooks have such long descriptions that I wish they were shorter and to the point. The only thing for me with this book is that I am a vegetarian and there are so many meat recipes in there.. and I also like to cook healthy and this is fairly old style with sugar and butter, white flour and heavy cream you get the picture so I have to make some adjustments for my taste buds but I find that fairly easy. I give it a 5 for the writing style and only a 3 for the ingredients used in recipes but to be fair when I grew up many people really cooked that way which is why I became a vegetarian:) Of course I would prefer a more holistic german cookbook...

The recipes are short and simple. To that end, sometimes TOO simple for those without adequate cooking skills. Plan on adding more or less ingredients than written for best taste. I enjoy cookbooks that are educational. This book is lacking in this area. That said, the recipes do work and are authentic. Be wary though, the book does not have the depth of explanation such as ones from Cooks Illustrated.

I enjoy this book. It does have some mistakes. The recipes are simple and short. I always read through the recipes before I start cooking. I use my common sense as well to tell me if it is going right. After all cooking is a series of adjustments in my view, turn heat up or down, add more of this, not to much of that. Thats what cooking is to me.I enjoy all the simple lunch recipes. If you know how to cook this book is good. Maybe not for the beginner.
