4.0 out of 5 stars German Flak Guns in WWII, April 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: German Flak in World War II: (Schiffer Military/Aviation History) (Hardcover)
The flak guns covered in this book are 20mm, 37mm, 50mm, 88mm, 105mm, 128mm and the twin 128mm. There are more 88mm guns shown than any other size.
Except for a dozen pages of dialog, this book is filled with photos of the various flak guns, its crews, the vehicles used to haul them and the battlefields they fought on. That leaves about 150 pages with usually two photos per page. A few pages have full page shots. There is coverage of all fronts. Armor trains and gun boats are also presented as well as the Berlin flak tower. Search lights, aiming bicoculars, radar targeting trucks and listening devices round out the coverage.
There were several photos of the 12 ton armored half tracks with 88s attached to their flat beds that could be used for both ground and air service also included. Other specialty photos included the twin 128s that were used in the towers at Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna.
When traveling the 128mm gun is disassembled and there is a sequence of shots putting this gun together that was interesting.

Another feature that added to this book's value were the brief but helpful captions that came with the photos.
Though already having the excellent book by Janusz Piekalkiewicz on the 88mm, I hesitated getting this book but I'm glad I did buy it for all the photos in this book are different. The photos are good quality as well.

This is a very commendable photo book and for anybody interested in this weapon classification that had such a major impact in the war should seriously consider this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An atmospheric photobook, July 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: German Flak in World War II: (Schiffer Military/Aviation History) (Hardcover)
This is a photo book with brief captions of WWII German FlaK units, mostly `in the field', but also during transport and refitting.
The photos themselves are mostly crisp and well chosen, allowing to perceive many details of the weapons, vehicles and uniforms (or lack of it).

But where this collection of photos really excels is in its `atmospheric` nature, making the viewer feel like he (or she) is there where the action is. As such this book it's a very valuable source for WWII Flak enthusiasts.

4.0 out of 5 stars good photo but few explanations, April 9, 1999

This review is from: German Flak in World War II: (Schiffer Military/Aviation History) (Hardcover)
This books had a lot of photos , many of them I have never seen before. The weeknewss is that the book did not say about the air defense of Germany in WW-2. I think the book from Mullar is a must for all interested in military history.
