4.0 out of 5 stars Great Record! I have a copy of the original LP!!, June 27, 2003

This review is from: German Folk Songs of Today & Yesterday (Audio CD)
I have a copy of the original LP of this issued by Request Records. The original title is "German Folk Songs of Yesterday and Today, Volkslieder von gestern und heute." It was recorded by the men's choir of the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany (Mannerchor der Volkswagenstadt Wolfsburg) with director Hans Martin. The jacket doesn't say what date the record was issued, but the choir was started in 1952. My guess is that the record is from the mid to late fifties, or maybe even early sixties. I can't find any mention of the choir on the web, so I assume it is no longer in existance. I picked up the record used. My Grandparents are German, and I've always been interested in German folk music. The arrangements of the tunes are very good as is the performance. I haven't heard the CD issue, but have enjoyed the LP very much!!

The following quote is from the Jacket:

"The Choir of the VOLKSWAGENSTADT WOLFSBURG was founded in 1952 by a few men whose common love was singing; it has become by now one of the finest male choral groups in Germany. The reason for its success is the individual dedication of each of its 90 active members, as well as the unselfish devotion of the organization's officers and its musical director, Hans Martin.

The choir's versatility has been unanimously praised by the critics in Germany as well as abroad, where this unusual ensemble has given numerous concerts. Every concert has drawn capacity crowds, and brought the well trained singers enthusiastic audience reaction.

The singers have performed successfully on many radio programs, after which thousands of delighted listeners wished to know whether records of the concert were available.

Interested listeners might want to know that the average age of the singers is 36, that the senic town of WOLFSBURG was founded in 1938, and numbers 80,000 inhabitants today, and is the home of the renouned VOLKSWAGEN WERKE, with which most of the townspeople are actively connected.

We are happy to present this first album of the MANNERCHOR DER VOLKSWAGENSTADT WOLFSBURG, which will continue to record exclusively for REQUEST RECORDS."
