5.0 out of 5 stars A small, portable German grammar
One nice thing about this little book is its durable plastic covers. They let you tuck it in a purse or shirt pocket and carry it anywhere, without damage.

It covers the basics, such as pronunciation, orthography (capitalization, syllabication and punctuation) and punctuation.

It also treats all of the parts of speech, including nouns, articles, adjectives, pronouns,...

before buying this book. I have to admit I made a bad purchase decision with this one, this book is way too simplistic and it doesn't teach much about any subject. It tries to cover all there is of German, but in trying to cover it all, it fails to be insightful in any subject.

It is a pocket guide. It might serve to you if you want to make a fast consult...

5.0 out of 5 stars A small, portable German grammar, April 17, 2001
This review is from: German Grammar (Barron's Grammar) (Paperback)
One nice thing about this little book is its durable plastic covers. They let you tuck it in a purse or shirt pocket and carry it anywhere, without damage.

It covers the basics, such as pronunciation, orthography (capitalization, syllabication and punctuation) and punctuation.

It also treats all of the parts of speech, including nouns, articles, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. And, this being German, the book also tells how to make compound words from independent words and add prefixes or suffixes to words.

There's a useful section covering such special topics as numbers, telling time, days, months, seasons and the weather, synonyms and antonyms, and common phrases and idiomatic expressions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dieses Buch ist ausgezeichnet!, June 11, 2000

Dr. Graves did a fine job in putting together a clear, accessible guide to the grammar of the German language. The different points of grammar are presented in a manner that is very easy to understand and retain... I highly recommend it to anyone who is learning German, especially if you are studying it on your own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, complete, and compact reference for German Grammar, May 31, 2000

This compact guide explains and shows examples of German grammar as compared with English. Pocket sized book which would benefit beginners as well as advanced speakers. I am studying German now and haven't seen a reference as beneficial as this one yet. Gives Parts of speech, Pronunciation, Verb Charts, Sentence Structure, Punctuation, Idioms and covers many other details.

before buying this book. I have to admit I made a bad purchase decision with this one, this book is way too simplistic and it doesn't teach much about any subject. It tries to cover all there is of German, but in trying to cover it all, it fails to be insightful in any subject.

It is a pocket guide. It might serve to you if you want to make a fast consult about something you're not sure about... but you gotta hope the book has the explanation for it. Even when the book is what it's supposed to be and it is what it says it is, I don't think that is an excuse that doesn't exempt it from critique. This is not a good book to learn, but to consult, as a reference.

Why spend your dollars in this simplistic book when you can buy something more informative and comprehensive? The good thing about this book is how portable it is, but as I've said before, you're gonna find trouble if you want to learn German thoroughly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best portable grammar book on the market!, December 23, 2011

I've had numerous grammar books over the years, and this version of a portable, useful German Grammar book is the best I've used so far.

The examples are clearly stated, easy to understand, and make sense!

During a recent trip to Europe where I spent much of my time in Germany and Switzerland, I decided that I could only take one reference book with me, and a dictionary. I chose to take this Barron's German Grammar as my go-to reference, and it was absolutely the best decision I could have made!

I heartily recommend this Grammar to anyone seeking to have a quick and easy reference that will allow you to apply its examples to the spoken and written language that you'll be dealing with in everyday business and day-to-day situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best german grammar, August 26, 2011

Hello

I never write a comment about good books. However, I have to because I saw a review with only 3 stars. I just want to counter-balance this erroneous review. I have many german grammars and I want to say that this small grammar is a gem. First, it is very portable; it is small and it has a plastic cover that protects it. Second, you will not find in any german grammar such conciseness. There are a lot of tables and they are to the point. If you look for something, you will find easily. Third, for a small book like this, there are a lot of examples. There are also good paragraphs on word order; this is lacking in other grammars. Fourth, even if the book is small, the print is readable. When I commute, I don't bring my big grammars but this small one is always with me. Purchase this small grammar and you won't regret it. Also, the price is very affordable. So for all these reasons, you cannot go wrong with this grammar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Structure but Needs Updating, September 8, 2010
This review is from: German Grammar (Barron's Grammar) (Paperback)
This book is well-organized and starts at the beginning, which I like. However, it needs to be revised in light of the spelling reform. The publication date of the book is in 1990! Hammer's grammar went through a revision for precisely that reason. Surely Barron's would do well to imitate that example.

AMAZON service is pretty bad. The company does not care about customers anymore. They promise an item to ship immediately and to be received in certain short time frame (item in stock, available immediately) but it does not happen. Instead, you review your orders only to find your items will arrive 3-4 weeks from the order date (even though items are in stock!). When you use 'callback' help option, don't count on them on calling back if the call drops.

The book is well organised, easily digestible and the layout make things easy to stick in memory. Paul G. Graves did a tremendously good job.
