The final volume of Samuel Mitcham s trilogy on the German Army in World War II focuses on panzer, panzer grenadier, motorized, and Waffen SS divisions. Among these units are the 1st SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler Division, whose members included tank ace Michael Wittmann; the notorious 12th SS Hitler Youth Division that fought the Allies in Normandy; the 3rd SS Totenkopf Division that wreaked havoc on the Eastern Front; and the panzer divisions that spearheaded the German blitzkrieg in the East and West.

What an effort to have researched every major german unit that fought in WWII. These series give a brief account of the combat history of german divisions. The only fault is that I have come across contradictory information involving some division histories, so who's right I couldn't tell you. If you're interested in a basic overview of virtually EVERYTHING the germans put into combat, at divisional level, then these are priced reasonably, easy to read and well worth it.

A good techical book to do reserch on the Army Panzers, Panzers Grenadier Divisions, and Waffen-SS Divisions. The book also gives a breif history of the Groups and Corps though out the Secound World War. There is a chronology of the war at the end of the book.

You will need to buy Volume I & II to complete the set.

I thought that the book was worth the money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many errors, October 21, 2007
This review is from: German Order of Battle Volume Three: Panzer, Panzer Grenadier, and Waffen SS Divisions in WWII (Stackpole Military History Series) (Paperback)
This is not an indepth review. I never made it that far and being removed from my other resourses have no means of information verification anyway. I had purchased all three books in the series. After looking through all three volumes, I was not happy with them at all. Judging solely from the incorrect captions of the few photographs included. (at least 50% of them were incorrectly captioned) Mr. Mitcham appears to not be as knowledgeable as his petigree would indicate. My concern was; how could someone whose research allows them to misidentify MP 40 submachine guns as light machine guns or a Pzkpfw 35 as a Pzkpfw II do the research required to correctly identify the units and subordinate units of an army as large and diverse as the German forces of WW II. In fairness I did not cross-reference his work with other sources and it may be accurate. However if he did not take the time to correctly caption the few photographs, then I will not take the time to worry about the validity of the rest of his work and I will use Nafziger for order of battle information. I promptly prepared a product return form.
