This review is from: German Seaman 1939-45 (Warrior) (Paperback)
This book starts out with how the Kriegsmarine had a choice in the kind of men it needed for its purpose. It follows the men through basic training, both EMs and Officers, to life aboard a ship and life in land units. It is interesting how the men on smaller boats like Minesweepers and Destroyers had an overall better comradeship and bond but experienced virtually no success(Destroyers) or recognition of success (Minesweepers) due to the constant break downs in the problem plagued boilers. On the Battlecruisers and Battleships, the men were a great deal more formal, strictly disciplined, and had a lesser bond but enjoyed more success, then eventually were killed in the war. This book is great for answering many questions like pay, rations, discipline, training, everyday life, life on different kinds of ships, and late war land units. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting to know about the men of this lesser known part of the Wehrmacht.
