Photo Documentary of U Boat Pens of WW2, November 27, 2009
This review is from: German U-Boat Bunkers: (Schiffer Military/Aviation History,) (Paperback)
The German conquests of Norway and especially France made the U Boat War against the Allies much easier since the captured ports were closer to the convoy shipping lanes. The bunkers built to protect the U Boats in harbor were massive and survived everything that the Allied planes could throw at them.
This book is loaded with B&W photos to show just how much went into creating safe bunkers for the German submarines. There are brief narratives about each port (Bruges, Brest, Lorient, St. Nazaire, La Pallice, BordeauxBergen, Trondheim and Valentin). These fortifications still stand today simply because it is easier to work around them than destroy them. The French still use some to this date. La Pallice was used in the film "Das Boot". The one in Trondheim (Norway) is open to visitors.
This book is very interesting and helpful to any navy buff, those interested in all aspects of the U-Boat war. I highly recommend this book, it is really enlightening to see how many resources were needed to support the U-Boat war.
