Book Description

Comprehensive Owner's Guide May 2005
A superlative hunter and a loyal companion dog, the German Wirehaired Pointer competes for perfection and affection in every area. Devised by German hunters at the turn of the last century, the German Wirehaired Pointer possessed intelligence, strength, stamina and boldness, key characteristics to excel in the field as a versatile hunting partner. Few working dogs are as eager to please as this multi-purpose sporting dog, who is able to point, retrieve, trail and hold wounded game—all in a day’s work. While rugged and tireless in the field, the breed is a real "people" dog, thriving on interaction with its owners. A gentle, even-tempered companion, the GWP is ideal for a family with children, blessed with patience, superior intelligence and an outgoing, fun personality.

This Comprehensive Owner’s Guide provides an insightful look at the GWP’s origins and history in Europe, the characteristics and personality of the breed and the breed standard, as well as information on selecting a well-bred puppy, caring and feeding the puppy, house-training and obedience training. Additionally, a lavishly illustrated chapter on preventive healthcare by Dr. Lowell Ackerman provides up-to-date accurate information on inoculations, parasite control, selecting a veterinarian and other topics vital to the ownership of a healthy pure-bred dog. This new Kennel Club Book series is the first choice of the country’s top breeders, trainers and veterinarians and will delight newcomers and GWP experts alike.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Little Specific to GWPs, May 28, 2010
By
This review is from: German Wirehaired Pointer (Comprehensive Owner's Guide) (Hardcover)
Lots of GWP photo's but then the info around the photos could have been cut and pasted from any other breed book. About the only breed specific parts of the book are the History and breed standard portions.

Also GWPs are bred to be all around hunting dogs. Yet there is no section on training a hunting dog.

This book is fine for general knowledge about generic dogs with a little specifically about GWPs but look elsewhere for info on training GWPs.

5.0 out of 5 stars German Wirehaired Pointer by Ute Wand, January 8, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: German Wirehaired Pointer (Comprehensive Owner's Guide) (Hardcover)
We bought the book after getting an 8 month old male puppy at a super adopt-a-thon thought to be "mostly" German Wirehaired Pointer. I feel like the author was observing our dog, describing him to a "T". Because this breed is extremely energetic and intelligent, they can be quite a handful. This book has been very helpful in providing insight about how to handle our new pet by teaching us about this particular breed's characteristics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, comprehensive book on GWPs, March 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: German Wirehaired Pointer (Comprehensive Owner's Guide) (Hardcover)
A good, small book on the history of the GWP and what to expect of its conformation and coat type etc. It is quite comprehensive, it includes everything from known traits (good and bad), their uses, the different coats and markings, good photos and great descriptions. I would have liked it to be a little thicker with a bit more information on perhaps famous dogs of the breed, etc, but if you want a basic book on just the German Wirehaired Pointer, this is the book to get.
