Book Description

3110174626 978-3110174625 July 1, 2002
The older runic inscriptions (c. AD150-450) represent the earliest attestation of any Germanic language. The close relationship of these inscriptions to the archaic Mediterranean writing traditions is demonstrated through the linguistic and orthographic analysis presented here. The importance of these inscriptions for a proper understanding of the prehistory and early history of modern Germanic languages, including English, becomes clear once the accumulation of unfounded claims of older mythological and cultic studies is cleared away.

Review

"ANTONSENS Beitr ge zur Runenforschung zeichnen sich nach eigener Einsch tzung durch eine Methode linguistischer Rigorosit t aus. Das macht ihre unzweifelbare Bedeutung aus. Rigorism l dt aber auch zu kritischer Diskussion ein."Heinrich Beck in: Zeitschrift f r Dialektologie und Linguistik 2/2006

This review is from: Runes and Germanic Linguistics (Trends in Linguistics. Studies and Monographs, 140) (Hardcover)
A thorough and technical discussion of the early runic inscriptions, and their importance in providing an insight into the common Germanic language that eventually evolved into English, Dutch, German and the Scandinavian languages.

It also looks at the birth of runes in the context of the existing alphabets of the time, aptly dispelling some of the romantic myths about cults & magicians, and looking beyond the Norse mythology recorded many centuries after the first runic inscriptions.

It does assume a background in linguistics, and some familiarity with Germanic languages, but still has much to offer anyone with a genuine interest in runes and the Germanic languages.
