This review is from: Runes and Germanic Linguistics (Trends in Linguistics. Studies and Monographs, 140) (Hardcover)
A thorough and technical discussion of the early runic inscriptions, and their importance in providing an insight into the common Germanic language that eventually evolved into English, Dutch, German and the Scandinavian languages.

It also looks at the birth of runes in the context of the existing alphabets of the time, aptly dispelling some of the romantic myths about cults & magicians, and looking beyond the Norse mythology recorded many centuries after the first runic inscriptions.

It does assume a background in linguistics, and some familiarity with Germanic languages, but still has much to offer anyone with a genuine interest in runes and the Germanic languages.
