4.0 out of 5 stars succinct and thorough, November 8, 2000

This review is from: Germanic People (Paperback)
I have read this book several times both before and after reading newer, more up-to-date material, and it has stood the test of time admirably. The author describes several possible explanations for the origins of the Germanic people, then makes his selection, based upon archaeological evidence. He does not state that his view is the only worthwhile one. He goes on to describe the various tribes both before and during the Roman Era, and gives their locations and details where they came from and where they went. The chapter on the culture of the Germanic people is also well done, and sheds light on a little-known group of early Europeans. His use of the term "nordic" is purely anthropological, and he states this in the notes section. The book has no racial overtones and is not written with prejudice. In my opinion, it is a good introduction to the history and culture of the Germanic people.

2.0 out of 5 stars Third Reich version of Iron Age Germany, June 12, 1999
This review is from: Germanic People (Paperback)
This book should not be available to children. Owen is/was Professor Emeritus at University of Alberta, but the book contains a "Germany is the origin of all good people" type of theory. It is fascinating for those interested in the origins of WWII or racism in general, but not recommended as history.
