Book Description

0842023151 978-0842023153 February 1, 1988
Germans to America provides both genealogists and researchers of family history with the first extensive, indexed source of German-surname immigrants who came to all ports in the United States between 1850 and 1893. This period witnessed one of the highest rates of German emigration in the nineteenth century.

The series reproduces information from the original ship manifest schedules, or passenger lists, filed by all vessels entering U.S. ports. All volumes are arranged in chronologi-cal order by each ship's date of arrival. For every passenger list, the following information is provided: ship name, port of departure, port of arrival, date of arrival, and list of German-surname passengers. Ships that departed from German ports or carried passengers who declared themselves to be of German origin are included, with full name, age, sex, occupation, and, when this information is given, country, province or village of origin provided for each emigrant. One of the most important features of this series is the complete index of names at the end of every volume, making it easy to find a particular individual or family name.

Germans to America may be ordered by individual volume. Standing orders, which receive a 10% discount, are also welcomed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Passenger List Index, May 23, 1999
By
snelson@pacyber.com (Hershey, Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Germans to America: Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports, Vol. 1: Jan. 2, 1850-May 24, 1851 (Hardcover)
This is an excellent passenger list index for anyone looking for German relatives who arrived during the unindexed New York years of 1850 - 1897. Each volume of the series includes an index only for that volume. The passenger lists include all information from the original list of the period. I found my relatives in 1 minute but I knew the 6-month period in which they arrived. The lists in this series are only for ships where the list is 90% German so there is no guarantee of finding an individual (I could not find one of my German ancestors that came over during the period this series covers).

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful but not perfect, December 1, 2004
This review is from: Germans to America: Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports, Vol. 1: Jan. 2, 1850-May 24, 1851 (Hardcover)
This book series indexes passenger arrival lists from US ports, giving names, ages, occupations, and sometimes places of origin for many German immigrants, grouped by families. It also lists the ship, ports, and the date of the passenger ship list. The quality of the transcription varies, and because of its inclusion criteria, it is to be considered an incomplete index to German passengers, but it still can be quite useful. Make sure you consult the original passenger lists also, because they often contain interesting and useful information not listed in the Germans to America books.
