From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Although nowhere indicated, this is a new edition of Virginia Kunz's The Germans in America (Lerner, 1966; o.p.). It remains a basic account of German settlers and their contributions to American life, from colonial times to the present. Much of the material has been reworked and tightened, various inaccuracies corrected, and the biographical material drawn together in the final chapter. Some new names, such as Louise Erdrich and Charles Schulz, have been added, while others have been dropped. The page format is more open, the print more dense. The prosaic text is accompanied by numerous black-and-white illustrations, many of them new but often dark and fuzzy. In an unfortunate error, Bradenburg rather than Brandenburg appears on the one map of Germany. Not as comprehensive as Anne Galicich's The German Americans (Chelsea, 1989) or Irene Franck's The German-American Heritage (Facts on File, 1988), this should still suffice for younger report writers.
