Book Description

November 15, 2001 0198228880 978-0198228882
Unparalleled in scope and depth, Germany and the Second World War is a magisterial ten-volume history series that will prove indispensable to historians of the twentieth century. This volume examines the transformation of a European war into a global conflict during the period from 1941-1943. It focuses on the politics, strategy, and operations of the belligerent powers as Germany lost the initiative to the Allies, and it spans both the climax and turning points of the war. Its detailed analysis is supplemented by numerous maps, diagrams, and tables.

4.0 out of 5 stars Germany World War II A Global War, November 2, 2007
This review is from: Germany and the Second World War: Volume VI: The Global War (Oxford World's Classics) (Hardcover)
The book is the best review of the events of 1941 through 1945 that I have read. It goes into much detail but sheds a great deal on the reasons for the war and the mistakes that lead to it. It should be a helpful lessons to readers interested in avoiding future wars.

The reader should be warned that the English translation is very direct. Paragraphs and sentence are quite long and complex. It is not an easy read
but is worth the effect. Buried into most of these long, complex paragraphs are some important insights into the thinking of the principals
especially Roosevelt, Hitler, Churchill and Stalin. The parallels to
the situation today are frightening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Economic History, October 1, 2007
This review is from: Germany and the Second World War: Volume VI: The Global War (Oxford World's Classics) (Hardcover)
I've never written a review before, but the review posted here has shocked me so badly I'm forced to give my opinion on the Title.

"saw a reference to this book that praised it very highly. I thought about buying it, but not at this insane price. The book is only about 350 pages long. I suppose Oxford University Press expects to sell only to libraries, hence the high price. But I would think this book would have significant possibilities for sales to lay readers. At any rate, the one star is for the price. As for the contents, few non-specialist readers will ever know."

I praise the book very highly. It's description of German naval activity and that of the blockade runners brings an entrely new outlook on this neglected portion of the war.

THe book takes the reader on a detailed trek through the years 1941-43 as the European conflict exploded into true global war.

From the end of the Blitzkrieg in 1941 to the stalemate in North africa.
Stalingrad, Rzhev, Velikye Luki, The Caucusus, Egypt.. The End of Vichy France, Invasion of North Africa and Iran, Kasserine and the Final Pocket at Tunis. The Japanese conquests - Pearl Harbor, Coral Sea, Midway.

The failure of German, Manpower, transportation and Industry and te ominous rumblings of what was to come with the stepping up of Strategic Bombing.. The triumph and fall of the Uboat arm.. it's all here.

Its all here in fantastic detail, the Organizational, Logistical and political aspects in a totally unbiased and professional setting. All the crazy decisions you hear about are finally explained in detail.

the boks 1299 pages long including indexes and chock full of maps and charts.

Anyone interested in WW2 needs to own these titles or at least pressure a local library into getting the collection... I own all but 1 volume - Vol. IV ( Good luck ) which is currently at 1000 dollars if you can find it. Vol. VI Global War is an absolutely mandatory addition to any active WW2 reading collection at any price.
