Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Carving out a niche in the heady early days of the British punk-rock scene wasn't easy. X-Ray Spex prevailed by creating one hell of a ruckus with guitar and sax providing the wall of noise and by focusing attention on irrepressible bandleader and vocalist Poly Styrene. Her songs dealt with teenage boredom and the absurdities of life in the modern world. Alas, Germ Free Adolescents is the only document this wildly unique and entertaining band left us to remember them by. But what a document it is. Included here are such minor classics as "The Day the World Turned Day-Glo" and "Warrior in Woolworths." --Mike Corrigan

Product Description
Vinyl Styled Digipak Edition of One of the Great English Punk Bands of the Late '70s X-ray Spex Formed in 1976 by School Friends Marion Elliot (Poly Styrene) and Susan Whitby (Saxophonist Lora Logic). They Exploded Onto the Punk Scene with One of the Era's Great Singles, the Feminist Punk Rallying Cry "oh Bondage, Up Yours". With Logic's Sax Stating the Melody Semi-tunefully and Jak Airport's Guitar Laying Down a Wash of Distorted Chords, Styrene's Vocal, Especially on the Chorus, is a Marvel, Making this One of Punk Rock's Great Moments. So, Too was X-ray Spex's Debut LP, "Germ Free Adolescents", which was Great in Spite of "oh Bondage" Not Being on It. Lora Logic was Gone (To Form Essential Logic), but her Replacement Rudi Thompson Played in as Rudimentary a Fashion, but Stayed in Tune a Little More. The Songs were Guitar-driven Punk-pop that Combined Outrage and Aggression with a Sense of Alienation and Disenfranchisement About Rampant Commerciality and a Increasingly Sterile and --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great album, April 20, 1999
By A Customer
The only thing missing from Germfree Adolescents was the classic Oh Bondage Up Yours, and now you can get that too on the same CD!!! A great group, and a belated thanx to the sax player for answering my fan mail back in 1979.

5.0 out of 5 stars The single best British punk album, January 26, 1999
By Eric M. Van (Watertown, MA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Punk, in its classic Brit manifestation, doesn't get any better than this. Powerhouse guitars and strong hooks galore, of course. But what makes this album a masterpiece is Polly Styrene's lyrics -- there's more telling commentary on the dehumanizing aspects of modern civilization in any randomly selected verse of hers than in the entire oeuvre of Roger Waters (and ten times as much humor). And she sings like a human howitzer. The influential critic Greil Marcus once listed this as the greatest record of all time, period; that's not an unreasonable opinion. So buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun, amusing album, not the definitive punk masterpiece
Yes, this album is chock-a-block full of catchy, thrashy British Punk, circa 1977, but to me, it's faults underscore the very weakness of British Punk, circa 1977. Read more
