Great Live Electronic Grooves!,
By
This review is from: Germination (Audio CD)
This album represents Lotus in a live setting, doing what they do best: melding a variety of musical styles together to create mesmerizing, danceable, and at times, hypnotic grooves. The first track is a cerebreal journey that starts off very calm, then begins to slowly build to a very melodic guitar riff which launches the band into a solid groove with stellar interplay between each band member. The second track, beginning with some catchy keyboard lines, is much more upbeat, with a very electronic feel to it. Layered keyboard lines, multiple guitars, heavy percussion, and driving drums will keep your ears occupied and your feet tapping the ground to the beat. Track three, Crescent, starts with haunting guitar lines that slowly build throughout the duration of this short tune, culminating with a barrage of drums and percussion, then tapering back down again before the song ends. Track four is a very up-beat danceable number at the start, then seemlessly morphs into a dark, trancy jam. Caywood, the fifth track on the album, has a latin feel to it, with lots of interplay between the guitarists, very interesting time signatures, and great percussion work. The final track provides driving bass lines that guide the band through some dark territory before slowing down to allow the listener time to digest the whole Germination experience as the last few minutes of the album glide by. Whether you are a fan of electronic music, jamband music, or simply appreciate good music with a certain level of improvisation, this album is for you.

This music is extremely simple.. composed of jazzy guitars and drums with quick jabs of high pitched synthesizer, I found this album a little too much to listen to all the way through the first time. There is defenitely more natural instruments than anything synthetic. The drummer is excellent, as is the guitarists, but the music in itself is a little bland if you've never heard anything like it before. After the second listening, I found it to be very relaxing. It's defenitely something you have to get used to. The melody lacks alot though, and can be repetative if it's all your focusing on is catchy electronic melodies .It defenitely requires patience. If you're looking for something upbeat and catchy like The first New deal cd, this is not for you. If you're looking for something more simple, with elements of jazz and funk with great percussion and soft organic electronic undertones and cheerful chirpy melodies, this is for you. ^_^

While this is a top 10 live album, it doesn't do the live Lotus sound justice. If you have yet to see them live it will rock your f**kin' socks!
