4.0 out of 5 stars An untimidating, practical account of germs for young reader
My three-year old son really enjoys this book. The book's fairly simple, yet informative account of how viruses and bacteria can make us sick helps to make the abstract concept of germs more concrete for him. As an added bonus, the book gives a plug for handwashing, covering mouths when sneezing or coughing, and not sharing cups that most preschoolers can benefit...

3.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity to teach about hygiene
Although this book is thorough in describing the differences between viruses and bacteria, I think it misses an important opportunity to reinforce hygiene...wash your hands, cover your mouth etc. These are given a cursory review on the last page, with no accompanying illustration. I had hoped that this book would help my almost-4-year-old to understand how people get...

My three-year old son really enjoys this book. The book's fairly simple, yet informative account of how viruses and bacteria can make us sick helps to make the abstract concept of germs more concrete for him. As an added bonus, the book gives a plug for handwashing, covering mouths when sneezing or coughing, and not sharing cups that most preschoolers can benefit from. I must also confess that, despite having read the Times Science section for years, I learned quite a bit about viruses and bacteria from this simple, well-illustrated book. A good buy, especially for parents who field a lot of factual queries every day. The Let's Read and Find Out series is a great way to let someone else do the explaining for a change.

3.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity to teach about hygiene, November 26, 2000

Although this book is thorough in describing the differences between viruses and bacteria, I think it misses an important opportunity to reinforce hygiene...wash your hands, cover your mouth etc. These are given a cursory review on the last page, with no accompanying illustration. I had hoped that this book would help my almost-4-year-old to understand how people get sick, how they get well, and how they can help prevent communicable disease to reinforce what I teach at home. I do not think that the authors did a very good job of meeting those expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars When my kids were sick, this was one of two books we always read..., June 22, 2006

My children, now 19 and 17, loved this book. I guess they were about 6 and 4 when I got it. Whenever they were sick, we read this book and a Sesame Street book called "It's No Fun to be Sick." Reading these books became a comforting ritual, as well as an easy way to learn some basic science.

3.0 out of 5 stars fine, but not enough detail, November 5, 2007

i got this book for my then-3yo daughter, who asked a ton about how germs work and how our bodies fight them. it was "kinda" enough for her, but then we got cell wars, and that is really a fantastic book. where this book can be hand-wavy, that one is much more detailed and really left her feeling like she understood what was happening in her body. she's 4 now and still rattles off information from cell wars, but we haven't read this book but once or twice since we got the other.

5.0 out of 5 stars For age 5 and up, January 7, 2012
A Kid's Review
I see low reviews of this book ... you are reading to a 3 year old with this book ... hmm you are on the wrong track! This book is recommended for 5 and up. Even my 4 year old is a bit confused with this book if you want to talk about germs in simple terms. But my 5 year old gets it.
My son is starting to get interested in the human body and how things work within. And I got this book since he is interested in blood and why we need blood etc. So this book best work in introducing the complexity of white blood cells and red blood cells and all the different kind of virus, bacteria etc. I also like the fact they have a picture of a child with a dentist. So now my son understand why he needs to go to dentist for check ups to make sure no cavities which are caused by bacteria eating away the tooth. And I also like the rules in the back of the book as a reminder that you need to do those things to keep your body healthy.
Great book for the curious 5 who ask why this and that all the time. And a great review for me, the mom, who loved biology a long time ago.

Easy to read educational book. Second graders read and understood. Able to take AR test for points in reading on this book. Pictures making learning about bacteria and viruses interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Science Book, October 25, 2011
Doesn't touch much on hygiene (only the last page) but that wasn't why I bought the book. My 3 year old loves it, and even I learned a bit - the science was excellent. The tone was just right, giving lots of information, not being "cutesy" yet explaining things clearly and concisely. Sparked a trip to the library for more books about germs, and a Google search for "pictures of bacteria" and she wanted more information about microscopes etc. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars a book about germs and not hygiene, November 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book explains to children the various kinds of germs and how they make people sick. I agree that they could also say more on hygiene but this book concentrates more on the germs.

Actually after reading this book my 5 year old son understands more on this subject and tried to ask questions on prevention. I love this book and would recommend it to all children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped Hook Us on LR & FO Science Books, August 11, 2010
We rather enjoyed this book. My child (then newly 5yo) was fascinated with it. We found the hygiene coverage sufficient... altho the importance of handwashing and such has been easy for us to instill as parents. The illustrations of what goes on 'in there' microscopically really seemed to help her grasp the concept of what a germ is. Definitely happy with our purchase.
