Geronimo
Once again Catherine A. Welch demonistrates her abilities in bring characters and events alive by not sugarcoating the issues and presenting facts about her subject. Interesting historical facts I certainly didn't read as a child. Not to mention she challenges the reader by stating infomation that many historians choose to leave out in children's text books. Geronimo's life as an Apache warrior and their battle against the Mexican government and the United States and the issue of placement of the Apache Geronimo on reservation are a few mentioned. The humanside is shown when it is stated that Geronimo lost all of his family members after the Mexician soldiers attacted his Apache camp. War is never pretty and seeing the death of his family caused Geronimo to seek his revenge. Another issue Geronimo wanted to return to his home in Arizona and New Mexico, but the hate and fear of the whitemen was to strong and President Theodore Roosevelt said no. Complicated issues and a complex man. Well done and put as simply as possible. A great read! Sincerely, Cynthia Kay Rhodes |
