5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Useful
One of the handiest aspects of this book is the series of walking tours that Frank suggests. They are manageable and organized by neighborhood, as well as by day of the week. This is especially useful, since shops, museums, etc. may be closed on odd days. This book is far more useful than the average "guide" to a city. A wealth of well-organized information...

We bought an early edition of this book, and have found it wanting. Yes, there were some good shopping recommendations. But the ratings for restaurants and many other points of interest are just not that good.

The newer editions are also poor, given their inclusion of establishments long since closed, or destroyed by terrorists.

This is a well organized, and comprehensive guide to all the wonders of New York City. The wide range of valuable information is incredible, there appears to be an answer for every visitor's question. It is a 'must own' book for every visitor, worker or resident of the Big Apple.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'Must-Have' For Anyone Going to New York City, May 21, 2005
My wife and I went on our first trip to New York recently. A friend told us about Gerry Frank's book, Where to Find It, Buy It, Eat It in New York. The book has all the usual information about museums, tours and hotels. But it also has information about the little out-of-the-way and unique places that we wouldn't have otherwise known about, such as the rare book store hidden away on the second floor of a Manhattan building , and the store that only sells purses and handbags but sells thousands of them. We went to three restaurants he recommended, and they all matched his recommendation. This is a book you can trust. It tells you about the good hotels and restaurants, the high-priced ones that are worth it and the ones that aren't, the ones that are the best value, and the ones to avoid. All written in an entertaining, easy-to-understand way.
Rhonda and I have the book saved in a special spot, waiting for our next trip to New York.

5.0 out of 5 stars This guy knows what he's talking about., May 21, 2007

Gerry Frank is a local boy (Portland, OR) and keeps us informed about where to go in Oregon, but he also knows "all the right stuff" about New York. He is definitely a man to follow when it comes to finding a great restaurant and more.

The Blue Guide to New York is a much better bet, for my money.

4.0 out of 5 stars gerry frank's new york, March 2, 2006
This review is from: Gerry Frank's Where to Find It, Buy It, Eat It in New York (Paperback)
fantastic book for anyone visiting or living in NYC. the only drawbacks are (1) the absence of any subway map and (2) use of the index to refer back to specific items in the book itself i,e, it's all in there, you just have to work to find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars New and improved 17th edition..., September 27, 2011
By
The newest edition just arrived and it does not disappoint. I own 3 older editions of Where to Find It, Buy it, Eat It in NY. This is not your mother's tour guide. It is absolutely packed with mainline and quirky places to discover in "The Capital of the World". Do yourself a favor and get this book so you too can share the treasures found in these pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide Book to New York, May 6, 2005
By
We've taken this book - and earlier editions - with us every time we've gone to New York, and it's always saved us time, money and lots of hassle, while leading us to some terrific sights, tastes, and bargains that we never would have discovered any other way. We like the book's specialized guides to visiting the city with kids, on foot, on a weekend, etc. The write-ups of stores, restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions get right to the point of what you want to know in order to choose how to spend limited time and resources and get the most out of a visit to the "Big Apple." Great maps, interesting background about the city, super tips, and Gerry Frank's no-holds-barred personal opinions make it a great read, as well as a great guide. It's what every guidebook should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive, July 30, 2003
By
This book is the most comprehensive guidebook I've seen -- with lots of extras. It has everything - restaurants, stores, hotels, services, museums, etc. - so it's the only guide I need. And I was excited to learn that an all new edition will be available in September 2003. Since the current edition was published in September 2001 there will no doubt be many new listings and updates (post 9/11). You can be sure that I'll be one of the first to get my hands on it!
