Editorial Reviews

Now available on 180g vinyl with a free digital download! Gerry Mulligan presented his handpicked sextet at the Liederhalle, where two of his most frequently played melodies, Line for Lyons and My Funny Valentine, will be instantly recognizable - perhaps best known to Mulligan fans from his "piano-less" quartet with Chet Baker, for which "Valentine" became something of a signature tune. Despite outward changes - including in the music - the Stuttgart concert shows that the ever self-critical jazzman never let his identity slip.

JazzHaus, the label that last month brought us the "Jutta Hipp - The Lost Tapes" album from 1952, has issued the "Gerry Mulligan Sextet Live at Liederhaus Stuttgart" from a November 1977 live concert recording. It has been released in vinyl(!). Ten years ago I never would have thought I'd ever be able say that about a new release again, but here it is. In a nod to modern media playback systems, Jazzhaus also includes a download card inside the jacket for a free mp3 download at their site. I have not downloaded the album, and here's my suggestion: if you can play this record on your system, hear it this way and no other version. Gerry Mulligan, one of THE greatest jazz saxophone players, composer and arranger extraordinaire, is heard here with Thomas Fay, piano; Dave Samuels, vibs; George Duvivier, bass; Mike Santiago, guitar; and Bobby Rosengarden, drums (a name familiar to anyone who watched the Dick Cavett show in the 70s). This exquisitely recorded concert makes me remember why analog (it HAD to be recorded on tape in 1977) sounds so warm and "true." All of the selections except Richard Rogers "My Funny Valentine" are Mulligan compositions, going the gamut in moods from the almost ballad-like "For An Unfinished Woman" to the uptempo "Line for Lyons" and the even faster-paced "Taurus Moon" in 6/4 before the calm and wonderfully inventive version of "Valentine," which one could consider almost an intermission for the ears before breaking into "Four for Three" and ending with "K-4 Pacific." Mulligan plays the baritone sax in all but one cut, for which he plays a soprano. Playing his signature bari sax, Mulligan attacks his riffs and lines in the way he was famous for, and the way most jazz sax players use an alto.Read more ›
