Format: Audio CD
Dating from 1953, this recording truly represents the nascence of "California Cool" and everything positive that now hackneyed terms conveys. Under the guidance of producer Gene Norman, Gerry Mulligan the nonpareil composer, arranger and baritone saxophonist put together a crack ensemble consisting of the cream of the West Coast crop. Which, with LA's Central Avenue scene at the time rivaling New York's 52nd Street for sheer energy and creativity, made for a formidable choice of players. Foremost among them Chet Baker, like Mulligan then in the first flower and brilliant morning of his youth, but that is not to slight the contributions of Pete Candoli, Bud Shank, Joe Mondragon and Chico Hamilton to the tentet sides, nor the quartet's rhythm section of Carson Smith and Larry Bunker.
But it is the music that truly sets this disc apart for me, consisting of seven Mulligan compositions and six standards, all arranged with that unmistakable Mulligan flair. I myself tend to favor the tentet offerings over the quartet, but that is because it plays such Mulligan favorites Westwood Walk, Walkin' Shoes, Rocker and A Ballad, compositions that for me (a admittedly hopeless romantic) define a moment in time when Southern California was a beacon to dreamers. Full of sunshine and promise and a feeling that if one could just preserve it in amber for all times, the grim cares of the post-nuclear Cold War world would simply melt away. Ah well, if the moment was fleeting, we still have preserved in amber the music it produced. And the pleasure we can take in it owes nothing to nostalgia.

Great to hear again one of my very first recordings that I had years ago on vinyl but lost during our house moves.
