Rediscover Gershwin with Glazier,

This review is from: Gershwin: Remembrance and Discovery, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
It is depressing to find that the music one discovered as a kid has become dulled or clichéd with repetition. There are antidotes, however, and this disk is one of them. Glazier is an incredibly intelligent (as well as technically skilled) performer of Gershwin and, on this disk, the performance of the Rhapsody in Blue in particular will knock off your proverbial socks. (Think of Carlos Kleiber's / Vienna Phil. performance of Beethoven's Fifth by way of "Why didn't the last 300 times I heard this sound like this?"). The piece is completely dependent on syncopation, and syncopation on syncopation, and Glazier nails it at every turn. Do yourself a favor.

Richard Glazier plays Gershwin's music as Gershwin intended to be played and probably better than Gershwin ever thought it could be played long after his death. The spirit of George Gershwin definitely lives within the body and soul of Richard Glazier. By chance, I happened to be watching a PBS special on television, which is how I came to discover Mr. Glazier. In a matter of minutes I became absolutely hooked on this pianist's music and am now one of his most ardent fans. This CD contains music I've never heard before and listening to it for the first time is quite an adventure, especially as performed by Richard Glazier. With most CDs you can expect about two or three "hits" at the most. With this CD, every tune is a precious gem and the very last track is like coming to the end of a lollipop-- pop goes your heart. I recommend this CD highly. Buy it-- you will be glad you did. |
