This review is from: Gertrude Lawrence in The King & I, Lady in Dark & Nymph Errant (Audio CD)
Gertrude Lawrence in The King & I, Lady in Dark & Nymph ErrantI waited a long time to get this apparently out of print item & got it from an Amazon Marketplace seller. I was pleased to get it. The King & I was Gertrude Lawrence's last Broadway & any other place show and was on the eve of taking it to her hometown of London that she was desperate to do but she died of cancer before this was to happen.
Not really a singer, but rather a sophisticated actress and childhood friend at acting school in London with Noel Coward. They made a number of dramatic sketches on 78rpm records together. The set also includes songs from Lady in the Dark which was later filmed with Ginger Rogers in Technicolor at Paramount. Also included is her classic English recordings from the 1930s stage show Nymph Errant written by Cole Porter. Nymph Errant had been bought by Fox for a film version which was never made but this was the basis of the Julie Andrews film Star at Fox which was basically about Gertrude Lawrence. The disc is well worth a listen and I have always liked these songs as performed by Gertrude Lawrence. |
