Olivier (pronounced O-li-vee-ay; it's French!) is a young priest (at least from the general POV - I estimate he's 20-something.) who is beginning to doubt his faith. So, he decided to go to the forbidden island of G. Will his superior, Father Messiah, say "Okay, no problem"? Nope! Instead, he hires the dark elf, Suzu, to track down Olivier and bring him home.

Meanwhile, Olivier is staying in an inn in a small town (try saying that five times fast!). In return for a miracle, the innkeeper gives him a mute slave girl. That's all I'll divulge for now...get the video!

Gestalt is excellent. The animation and character designs are beautiful, complete with plenty of drool-worthy bishonen. The plot, as far as I can tell, is great. My biggest complaints are a) the incompleteness and b) Suzu's voice is *obnoxious*. But those are easily overlooked, and other than that, it's great, including the dubbing. Wendee Lee, a well-known dub VA plays Ohri. I highly recommend this if you want comedy, action, and bishonen!

There's also tyranny in one of the places that they go to and must confront.

The OVA has some very beautiful character designs. The story however, seems to be missing a lot of important information, is very rushed, and totally confusing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kick animation, but....Where is the rest of the story?!, October 21, 2000
This review is from: Gestalt [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Like the title says where is the rest of the story? The anime of Gestalt is pure eye candy, but you are just left hanging at the end and unless they release the manga in america, you won't know how it ends any time soon. The movie itself is wonderful and the music along with the animation are very nicely done. The story revolves around the young priest Olivier and the 18 year old sorceress Ohri who happens to be mute (the way they solve this problem is very funny). Olivier is on a quest to find out the truth behind an age old legend after leaving the Vesaria order and he just finds no end of trouble from darkelves, carrion crawlers, and of course the adorable Ohri gives him a few problems along the way. The movie's suggested age limit should probably be obeyed due to blood, cussing, nudity, and the occasional lewd comment. In my OPINION, Gestalt is an anime not to be missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars it's worth the five bucks, May 6, 2003
This review is from: Gestalt [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a story about a priest from the Vasaria order, who leaves the order to find the real truth about the legend og G (Gestalt). A qute sorceress/slave (Ohri) who becomes his traveling partner. And a dark elf sendt to bring him back.
Ohri was actually given to the priest, by a very gratefull landlady. (he had earlier preformed a miracle, making some trees blossom or something.) Not a very suitable gift for a priest tough. But this is where the humor lies, Ohri is constantly flirting with the priest, taking her clothes off in front of him (no nudity) and making him feel uncomfortable. He can also give ohri more power by kissing her. Her powers have been sealed, that's why she was mute in the beginning of episode one, father olivier's spell/kiss can break this spell. But her powers only come back gradually, so she's begging him for kisses all the time.

Ohri's also in the middle of a game with her siblings, a game to see who the strongest is, they're sendt to diffrent places in the country, with some of their powers sealed. And there can only be one winner. So this quest won't go exactly as father Olivier planned.

The animation is quite beautiful, not the best but good enough to spend 5 bucks on. The main cast is good looking, the priest is handsome/qute so is Ohri's brother. The girls are qute. You can see Ohri on the cover.

There's no yaoi, not much nudity, some violence, and a lot of magic. I also thought it was funny, but I guess that's up to you, every one can't like the same stuff.

I gave it four stars because there is only 2 episodes and the story is incomplete.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting, but unfinished ..., January 29, 2000

This review is from: Gestalt [VHS] (VHS Tape)
gestalt, from the manga of the same name by japanese shoujo writer yun kouga, is the story of a priest who loses his faith and decides to venture to the forbidden land of gestalt deep to the south to gain an affirmation of his beliefs. (however, gestalt is nothing like another of kouga's writings: 'earthian.') along the way, he picks up a companion, ouri, and they become romantically involved. gestalt is a romantic comedy first and foremost as the aggressive ouri continually teases our poor protagonist olivier. the mood is lighthearted throughout and is often thought of as a parody to the typical fantasy RPG. the quality of the animation is good, and what one would expect from an OVA, but not as detailed as something like Macross Plus, Princess Mononoke, or X/1999. although, the story sometimes seemed a bit over-the-top and silly, gestalt is a fun watch, full of bishonen male characters and kawaii female ones (i thought that ouri was very cute ^_^), and ALMOST none of the gratuitous fan service that you would see in an anime directed at adolescent boys. the biggest complaint that i have is one typical of anime genre: the story is only one episode in the journey, and after it finishes, you are left wanting to know more of what happened, but there are no further episodes.
