5.0 out of 5 stars Another Good Read from Yun Kouga, June 23, 2009
This review is from: Gestalt, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Yun Kouga has a way of playing with charactes that makes reading the mangas quite an adventure. Filled with her usual doses of gender-bending, and same-sex romances it's quite a start for the re-release of the manga. Gestalts characters are more than meets the eye so don't let the beginning appearances fool you.

The story centers around an inexperienced priest as he makes his journey to the forbidden island of Gestalt. With him is the interesting slave Ouri, who seems to possess more magic than Olivier first thought and seems to have an extensive knowledge of the Land of Gestalt. Don't let Ouri fool you, as "she" also seems to be a he, and is connected to those attempting to stop the priests journey and destroy them all.

The first book of the series leaves a good number of questions, but it's a good read for those who like a puzzle.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Great Entertainment, October 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gestalt, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Hi! I'm Axel M. and this here is an awesome manga. I read a scan of it (so that could review it) and I ordered and it will be arriving soon. It is awesome (did I already say that?). While the introduction is quite unexplained, it has great artwork that give it an awesome 1990's video-gamey feel and after the characters do have their own stats like in a game. The artwork is very good. So it follows this priest dude (woman?) named Olivier who has this cool star on his forehead, along the he meets this cute Ouri dude (girl?) who has lost his power to speak. They both have magic powers and there's elf girls and it's awesome read. Anyway this is like totally a big adventure/fantasy type story that is not-page-gripper but is still very likable. I reading the second right now and it is not that kind of manga that just can't put down, and it is not overly-emotional but it is still entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting wild journey begins, July 14, 2009
This review is from: Gestalt, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Presented in unflipped format (read right-to-left, just as the author originally drew it), Gestalt Volume 1 is a black-and-white manga (Japanese graphic novel) that takes a sharp twist on the usual fantasy-adventure saga! Father Olivier is a peaceful cleric undergoing a crisis of faith - all his life he has been taught that a terrible banished demon god whose name cannot be spoken (he is known only as "G") is the embodiment of evil - but is this really true? Could the legends about G be a distorted story as told by the victors of the conflict? Olivier befriends Ouri, a young girl from the south who cannot speak. But she is anything other than demure - her violent side is a superhuman entity that considers clashing with others of her kind a fantastic game, regardless of the fallout to surrounding humans or their cities! The dark elf Suzu has been sent to stop Olivier; when she catches up to him, does she (or Olivier) have a prayer of weathering Ouri's wild side? An exciting wild journey begins, in this action-packed story where for once, it is the male member of the adventuring party who is a soft-spoken priest! Recommended for older teen readers due to some violence (and very skimpy clothing).
