My Companion for over 30 Years,
By
This review is from: Gesture of Balance: A Guide to Self-Healing & Meditation (Nyingma Psychology Series) (Paperback)
"Gesture of Balance"is one of the best books I have ever read on meditation, relaxation and balance. As he describes, we are the meditation--everything becomes part of us as we become open, accepting and allowing. "Gesture of Balance" has been a wonderful companion for me for over 30 years.
This book and author have given me peace of mind and security within my meditation practice and in life itself. This evening I enjoyed reviewing his chapter on how to balance our emotions. My partner will be undergoing surgery soon, so I am sad and fearful for her. She is so brave and has been through so much with this cancer. And, just when we think she is free of this disease, it appears in another system. Thank you Tarhang for your guidance through these tough times. Amazon press has a special on this book. This could be the best $10.00 you ever invested. Gerald W. Vest, ACSW/LISW Professor Emeritus New Mexico State University School of Social Work Las Cruces, NM

Meditation: Start Here,
By James E Kantor (Barcelona, Barcelona Spain) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gesture of Balance: A Guide to Self-Healing & Meditation (Nyingma Psychology Series) (Paperback)
Although I'm just starting my meditation, I think it's an excellent introduction into meditation and one's life. It focuses heavily on the mind and building awareness and thereby gives glimpses at the goals of the practice of meditation. Tulku continually explains why many people feel lost, anxious and misdirected in their lives and how meditation can help these people find a natural inner confidence. If you're looking for something to tell you to 'sit here, think this, breath this way' you might be disappointed in the philosophical nature of this book's writing. I think that's a normal attitude for us beginners to have, but once you've begun your journey on the path of meditation you'll probably think your original preconceptions about it were silly.

This is a book to practice not just to be read. The wording is carefully chosen to calm our minds and to bring our inner awareness and enlightenment.
This is my 2nd book of Tarthang Tlku who speaks in a religion free base. It is a very useful book to help you enjoy and feel alive like nothing else.

I couldn't wait to finish it so I could read it again. This is the best book on meditation I have ever read. There is no fluff or western "feel-good" verbiage. No bias. Just: What is required, why to do it and suggestions on how to best accomplish. The author comes across clear and lucid in an engaging way that seems as if he is speaking directly to the reader. Any sincere student will appreciate what this book has to offer.

This is a book that, in my opinion, cannot be praised enough. It is simple yet profound and the writing reflects the unassuming dignity of a master who is actually trying to teach what we, students, need the most. This is one of the few books i keep near me all the time and it has been a sustained, and never ending, source of inspiration.
The basic approach is to teach how to relax, disidentify and feel into awareness of the body, mind and eventually, into the open space where everything is possible. Awareness is an acquired taste. Rinpoche guides the reader towards it from several different angles and with an exquisite understanding of the Western mind and its wiles. Above all, he is appealing to the open, generous heart. A priceless book.
