Life has a way of knocking you down. In this book, author Sheryl Giesbrecht goes through parts of her life where she was knocked down. Her life has been a series of ups and downs, but she has managed to find strength in God's teachings when she needed it most. She is now sharing these ideas with people in a short book that will help people become focused on the good parts of their lives instead of the bad.

This book is written in bite-sized pieces that even the busiest of people can handle. Sheryl shares so many of her life experiences, so you know she understands this topic. Her life has indeed knocked her down several times, but she has managed to find the ability to keep moving on. I like that she shared not only her experiences but also those of people she has helped through her public speaking. This helped to further show how these principles can be put into action.

Each chapter starts with the story of someone who survives a free-fall event, so if you have a fear of flying I'd skip those parts. I know they're meant to be inspiring, but it is a little creepy. The rest of the chapter though contains good advice with scripture. There are study questions at the end of each chapter too, and this lets you really put things into practice. This is a super quick read, but it will leave you with ideas on how to get back up and move on with your life through all hard times.

Get Back Up: Trusting God When Life Knocks You Down by Sheryl Giesbrecht, ©2013
With honesty and transparency, Sheryl Giesbrecht shares how she learned to trust in God, no matter what life may bring. She says, "Our lives can be a lot like that freefall, but we can survive whatever challenges God puts in front of us if we just get back up."

Life is not always easy or fair for the follower of Christ. Yet, Sheryl Giesbrecht has learned, from the depths of past pain, it is possible to be raised up. It is possible to heal. Most importantly, it is possible to exchange hurt for hope. In her inspirational new book, Get Back Up: Trusting God When Life Knocks You Down, Sheryl tells her own story. She uses scripture to tell the stories of so many other Biblical figures who stumbled before they could be helped up. Sheryl's message is one of hope. Trusting God in the midst of a life turned upside down is essential to survival. Without Him, life would not be worth living. Climbing out of the pits of despair would be impossible. Yes, with God to lean on, finding hope is possible. Healing is possible. God is capable of taking our losses and mistakes and turning them into something remarkably beautiful. Won't you let Him?

Sheryl's own story began with her conversion to Christ more than 30 years ago. Once a rebellious teenager, alcoholic and drug addict, she knows the difficulties that come with overcoming physical addictions. However, that is just the beginning of her incredible testimony of faith and resilience. A cancer survivor, Sheryl fought stage 4 lymphoma and knows the heartbreak of disappointment, discouragement and disease. She encourages others that they, too, can overcome.

Format: Paperback
I just finished reading a new book written by Sheryl Giesbrecht, called "Get Back Up". I chose to review the book, but I did not actually think I would be able to apply it to my personal life. I knew the book would be about tragedy and applying scripture to "getting back up" from those tragedies.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the book. Giesbrecht starts off each chapter with a true story of someone surviving against the odds - parachutes not opening, airplane crashes - and then she relates that to how we can survive the storms in our lives. As she studied the scripture and talked about facing tragedy, though, she told her personal story. Starting with her rebellious teenage years, to what seemed to me like years of church ministry disappointments, serious illnesses, and losing loved ones, she is completely open and honest about her family's shortcomings, her emotions, and how they turned to God throughout everything. They had so many struggles, and there were so many that I could personally relate to, so I felt like her book made me understand the struggles that others in my life have been going through.

She talks about what happens in our lives, how to know the truth (she gives great scripture here), forgiveness, depression, fear, loneliness, and she pulls it all together using biblical truths.

This book is such an easy read, I literally read it in just a few hours. Having my Bible open while I read it was perfect because I could go straight to the scripture she was talking about and feel that confidence of those truths while making notes in my Bible.

I highly recommend this book. In fact, I doubt I'll be keeping it for very long because I expect to pass it along as soon as possible!

This book was provided to me at no charge for my honest review from Litfuse Publicity Group.

"Get Back Up: Trusting God When Life Knocks you Down" combines the story of Sheryl Giesbrecht's spiritual journey, her rebellion as a teenager, her conversion experience and the life transformation that follows. Her writing is permeated with positive re-enforcement, hope, Biblical truth, practical application, and heartwarming illustrations from real life stories of overcoming courage, endurance, and perseverance.

The material is well organized, formatted with the reader in mind, and rich in its focus on life changing principles. The chapter summaries are a helpful tool for previewing the material of the 10 chapters packed with practical pointers for assimilation, application, and action.

The study questions at the end of each chapter add to the value of the book as a study guide for personal or group use. These questions are thought provoking, accentuating the Biblical illustrations and life lessons for meaningful and rewarding contemporary Christian living.

Sheryl understands the reality and hurt of rejection and the feelings of loneliness that led her to discover the transforming freedom found through forgiveness and the rejuvenating power of prayer. Her writing resonates with the sense of her quality relationship with the Lord Jesus.

Although "Get Back Up: Trusting God When Life Knocks you Down" is written with women in mind, the principles introduced are applicable for anyone, man or woman, and are life changing.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own.
