Breanne Mooreland's honeymoon in the Sierras isn't going anything like she had planned. In the first place, she expected to be married. She expected her husband to be on the honeymoon with her. She thought maybe her luggage would be there, too. The turbulent flight and snowstorm of the century weren't in her plans, either. And she definitely didn't expect to find a naked man in the shower of her honeymoon suite! A very annoyed naked man who is chasing her through the freezing-cold house. To make things worse, the phones and electricity go out, plunging the house into total darkness. A man who looks like a hoodlum shows up claiming to be the butler, and the rest of the staff members are equally unconventional. Breanne is not having a good day.Cooper Scott needed to get away. He quit his job as a vice cop and his brother sent him off to a luxurious mansion in the Sierras to relax, regroup and get his life back together. He certainly didn't expect a woman carrying a neon pink vibrator to show up in his bathroom while he was in the shower. And it didn't do wonders for his ego when she ran screaming through the house to get away from him. Cooper is not happy to discover there has been a booking mix-up. The manager is missing, and no one is leaving until the blizzard stops raging outside. Cooper and the woman, Breanne Mooreland, have no choice but to share the house. Then Breanne stumbles over a dead body, and things really get interesting. Cooper can't suppress the cop inside and no one is above suspicion. Certainly not any of the motley group of characters who staff the mansion. After all, the dead man used to be their boss. Breanne is spooked by the whole situation and she can't seem to keep away from Cooper. The air itself practically sizzles when they're together. The trouble is, Breanne decided to swear off men completely after her disastrous almost-wedding. So why did fate have to throw Cooper in her path now? The sexy, capable cop is thoughtful, generous, and understanding to boot. Can Breanne resist him? What happens when the trip is over and it's time to go back to real life? GET A CLUE is witty and humorous, intriguing and suspenseful, with plenty of steam and sizzle. I thoroughly enjoyed the diverse group of characters who run the mansion and the skillful way they were integrated into the story. Even in the midst of a blizzard, the setting in the Sierras is absolutely beautiful. There's plenty to enjoy but the relationship between Breanne and Cooper is what I like best. Each has an abundance of reasons to mistrust the opposite sex and I loved watching them confront their issues and deal with the undeniable attraction between them. If you're looking for a fast-paced read with just the right balance of steam, humor, suspense, intrigue and surprises, don't miss GET A CLUE!

Jill Shalvis does Agatha Christie,
By
This review is from: Get a Clue (Paperback)
Dumped at the altar"I-hate-men" Breanne Mooreland looses her luggage, gets left at the door of a seemingly empty lodge in the middle of a raging blizzard, finds a naked man in her shower and a dead body in the wine cellar. Cooper can't believe his eyes when he turns and sees a woman ogling him in the shower. Not exactly the ski-bunny he was expecting when his brother booked him the place for a much-needed get-away. Breanne irritates him in more ways than one and he's stuck with a murder investigation in an isolated lodge in the middle of a snow storm with the goofiest set of usual suspects this side of sanity. Dante is at the top of the list of any Christie-an detective worth his salt and the taciturn street-wise butler doesn't help his case with his enigmatic personality. Shelly the cook? Was her naiveté only a front for a cold-blooded killer? Lariana the housekeeper doesn't look like she scrubbed a lot of floors in her skin-tight clothes and high-heeled shoes. And finally Patrick the handyman whose language any sailor would envy. With giggle inducing wit, Shalvis lets the humor fly without sacrificing the sexual tension and romance that marks her other works. This RITA Award nominated author has done it again with characters who leap off the pages and a mystery that will not be solved until the end. "Get a Clue" sticks with you and will not allow you to put it down until it's finished. One of the best books that I've read in my over 30 years of romances, "Get a Clue" is a book that I highly recommend.

Things were not going according to plan when Breanne Mooreland arrives at her honeymoon destination soaked to the skin, chilled to the bone, minus her luggage and her groom, seeing how she had just been left at the alter. At least she thought she was alone, until she walks in on a naked man in her honeymoon suite. Cooper Scott, who needed some time away from his job as a cop, also thought he was alone. Imagine his surprise at being ogled by a woman wielding a dayglo pink vibrator. This was the first surprise of many for the two of them. Continuing surprises include a blinding snowstorm that simply would not let up, a most unusual staff that is determined to accommodate them despite a power failure from the storm, and Cooper and Breanne fighting a losing battle against the undeniable attraction that is pulling them together. After a dead body is discovered in the wine cellar and Cooper's law enforcement training takes over, he is determined to keep Breanne safe, not knowing who can be trusted. Cooper and Breanne are absolutely adorable and the cast of secondary characters in this book is pure fun. Jill Shalvis never fails to deliver romance with a laugh, a tug at the heartstrings, and a wonderful dose of steamy romance. Add to that a touch of mystery that adds just the right touch. Get A Clue is food for the romantic soul.

A Heroine That Finally Gets A Clue!!!,
By
This review is from: Get a Clue (Paperback)
Ms. Shalvis has penned a very fun and quirky read with not your average heroine and one yummy hero. Add a snow storm, some secondary characters that are not what they seem, stir in one dead body...and voila one entertaing "who dunit" read!Breanna Moorland has had enough! Her day has been wretched and it hasn't gotten better. Left at the alter...airline trip that was horrid, lost luggage, horrid snow storm, over booked lodgings...and one yummy naked man in her shower. And a blackout. It should be mentioned that Breanna doesn't do the dark! So things can only go up right? Wrong...things are going to get worse. Breanna is going to stumble into a corpse and that's only just the beginning. Now if she only hadn't sworn off men because yummy naked guy is actually Cooper Scott, burned out vice cop and he makes her think very naughty things. Cooper is up in the sierra's to detox from the job that he has just quit. So when he's in the shower and is walked in on by one beautiful looking lady...he's actually less than thrilled. Now if only he can keep his thoughts and lips to himself. Well, that's not going to happen and when a dead body is found and the staff along with Cooper and Breanne find themselves trying to figure out who the killer is before he or she can strike again. Oh, and Copper and Breanne have to eventually deal with their burning chemistry...right? This read was a total hoot! Ms. Shalvis truly has a fun sense of humor and it shows in this read! Cooper and Breanne were fun characters and the steam that they managed to generate is well...burning hot. Add to this the fun "who dunnit" storyline, and the colorful secondary characters such as Dante the ex gang member who just so happens to now be a butler...and these back burner storlines and the reader is served up a satisfying read! This is a fast enjoyable that will more than entertain the reader.

Highly Recommended,
This review is from: Get a Clue (Paperback)
This book is LAUGH OUT LOUD funny! Each chapter started with an entry in Breanne's journal, and they were absolutely hysterical. And Cooper Scott, well, he's a hero to die for. There was suspense, humor, sexy, steamy love scenes, colorful secondary characters that were funny and engaging in their own right, not just a means to a subplot. This book has it all. I highly recommed it!

Get A Clue sizzles,

Jill Shalvis writes a delightfully funny and sexy book in Get A Clue.Breanna Moreland has been stood up at the altar for the third time. She decides she is going on the honeymoon just to rethink her life. Boy is she in for a shock when there is a naked man in her shower. Cooper Scott needed to get away from it all. He was burned out as a cop. Cooper was told by his brother to get his act together. He thinks a get away in the mountains will do the trick. But there is a mix up with the rooms. A woman wants his room. This spitfire of a woman intrigues Cooper. Stick Cooper and Breanna together and you can watch the temperature melt the snow. Both come to this mountain getaway with problems and realize that they have found the unexpected. Get A Clue has a quirky cast of characters that run the mountain lodge. They add an additional layer of laughter and intrigue. This book had me laughing, tearing up and reaching for the fan. It's another great read from Jill Shalvis.

A FUN Read!,

This review is from: Get a Clue (Paperback)
Breanne Mooreland has been dumped at the alter and since the scum sucking groom has already paid for the honeymoon, Breanne decides to go to get away from the embarrassment the whole situation has caused. When she arrives at the mountain resort home in the middle of a blizzard, she's introduced to a naked showering guy who's already staked a claim to the honeymoon suite. Cooper Scott needed to get away for awhile and what better place than a secluded mountain? Not long after their arrival, a dead body is found. Now Bree and Cooper are in a house surrounded by 4 other people -- and one of them must be the murderer! This story had me laughing almost constantly, but in true JS form, a scene here and there would make me have that 'emotional tug' that just made me sigh. Cooper and Bree are like oil and water -- at least at first -- and watching them dance around each other was fun. I was rooting for all the couples in the house and the closer I came to the ending, the more I didn't want there to be a resolution! But -- I loved it! I'm putting it on my 'this is what I aspire to' shelf, because really, I just love the way JS writes! Shelly @ www.dramedyoflife.blogspot.com

Steamy yet comical murder mystery,
By
This review is from: Get a Clue (Mass Market Paperback)
Being jilted at the altar doesn't mean you can't go on a honeymoon, right? Breanne travels to the mountains in a snow storm no less to cash in on the honeymoon her fiancé booked with hopes of making him spend more, only to discover a surly but sexy man is already taking up residence in her honeymoon suite. The last thing burnt out cop Cooper needs is a high-maintenance, vibrator-wielding woman making demands. They reluctantly share accommodations while fighting an attraction to each other. When one of the staff is found dead, the two are tossed into a murder mystery with a motley hotel staff and AWOL hotel manager in the middle of nowhere without power or a way to contact authorities in an apparently haunted house.Shalvis hit a home run with her story of murder and romance in the mountains which is actually quite funny. The bantering between Breanne and Cooper keeps the story moving at a brisk pace and the murder investigation will remind readers of silly movies like "Clue." And like any good Shalvis novel, the romance just sizzles right off the pages.

Nothing like a honeymoon without a groom! But, having been left at the altar, Breanne decides to go on her honeymoon by herself. Hey, it's paid for. Unfortunately, she has a terrible flight and her luggage is lost. Then she ends up snowed in, at a mountain lodge, with no power and a burnt-out cop who says he gets the only available room, the honeymoon suite, because he was there first! Things go from bad to worse when Breanne stumbles over a dead body who seems to be one of the wacky staff! This book was so funny! I didn't see the end coming at all. It was very unique. Breanne's journal entries were so great I copied a lot of them for future reference. EX: "My life would be much more amusing if it was only happening to someone else." My only question is, if there was no power how were they constantly taking hot showers? Even if they were gas hot water heaters you have to have power to pump the water. Same thing with the toilets, you have to have power to pump the water. But, I guess that's why they call it fiction!

~* 3.5 Stars *~She was left at the alter (again), and is now on her honeymoon with no groom. She's wet, freezing cold, stuck in a strange place, caught in a storm the likes of which hasn't been seen in centuries, with no electricity (she's afraid of the dark), no luggage (got lost in transit), a naked man in her shower (okay, so that's not exactly a bad thing), and all she's got as a flashlight is a glow in the dark vibrator that was part of the honeymoon package the exclusive rental home provided. To say that Breanne Mooreland is having a bad day would instantly vault you to the top of the Understatement of the Year Awards. And then there's that dead body... A reservation glitch put ex-cop Cooper Scott in the honeymoon suite at an exclusive rental home. He was minding his own business, taking a shower to ward off the chill of the storm, preparing for a week of skiing and snow bunnies while he tries to get his head on straight and his life back together. Turning around after bending to pick up the soap, however, brought him face to blushing face with a gorgeous woman holding a vibrator in her hand. A gorgeous woman obviously staring at all his many and varied assets. Well, he's had worse initial meetings. But then there's that dead body... Truthfully, both their vacations have turned into a hellish nightmare, but no amount of fear or tension can prevent the attraction that burns between Breanne and Cooper. The problem is, Breanne doesn't believe in love any more, and all Cooper wants is something real. Figuring out how a body got dead before the condition spreads may be easier than convincing the delectable Breanne to give him a shot with her heart. Get A Clue gets off to a bit of a rough start, focusing on how sucky Breanne's life is at the moment, and how scared she is about...well...everything. It made me wonder why she'd decided to go to the mountain retreat by herself to begin with if everything was going to make her so flighty and frantic. She got on my nerves pretty quickly and stayed there through most of the book. Her character seemed defined by her issues instead of by her personality, so she came off as more of a high strung damsel in distress than I prefer for my female leads. Once the body was discovered, the plot turned from situational comedy to a more tense suspense, and the change didn't totally work for me, again because Breanne kept up this push-pull relationship with the one man who she's sure isn't responsible for the dead body. I couldn't figure out what Cooper found so appealing about her. Romances don't work for me if I can't understand why one of the two involved is falling for the other. In contrast, Cooper was a solid male lead, and unlike Breanne, he made a good transition between the lighter, comedic first few chapters to wary concern when the body was discovered. His cop nature flipped on and it was a smooth switch, enhancing his protective nature to pleasant results. Secondary characters served more as red herrings and objects of suspicion, and weren't afforded much in the way of development, but what was there wasn't objectionable. I liked the cook Shelly and the butler Dante. Their ancillary romance was cute. While the book started out shaky for me, I ended up being really pleased with the ending. I was concerned how it was going to play out, but the resolution to the suspense was satisfying, including a plot twist that I hadn't anticipated, and Breanne did eventually evolve into a decent romantic lead. In the end I felt Get A Clue was a bit uneven, but I like Shalvis' writing style and overall enjoyed the book. And many of Breanne's e-journal notes (kicking off each chapter) gave me more than a few chuckles. Reviewed for One Good Book Deserves Another. |
