4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging hard rock, May 21, 2007
By
This review is from: Get It on Credit (Audio CD)
This album, now available on a remastered CD, was probably the best of the four studio releases by Toronto. Named for their adoptive city, Toronto was a hard rock band that achieved some success in the late 1970s and early 1980s. While they were known primarily in Canada, singer Holly Woods came from the United States, and second guitarist Sharon Alton came from England. Because of their two female members, they were often likened to Heart, but their style was harder, closer to Pat Benatar. This CD is consistently strong from beginning to end. The songs feature good melodies and engaging hooks. This edition also includes two bonus tracks, What About Love, which was later turned into a major hit by Heart, and the autobiographical Across the Border, a chronicle of their own early years.

4.0 out of 5 stars early 80's melodic rock ...good female vocalist, January 18, 2006
This review is from: Get It on Credit (Audio CD)
I was into Toronto in the early 80's when they were coming out of Canada. I saw them opening for Nazareth in Beaumont, TX. They had a hot little chick singer and an equally hot female rhythm guitarist/back-up vocalist. They tore Nazareth up. If you like Heart, Loverboy, Survivor, etc., you'll like these guys. Catchy songs, adequate musicians, great vocalist.

5.0 out of 5 stars this overlooked female fronted 80s band hits its stride..., November 9, 2010

This review is from: Get It on Credit (Audio CD)
Toronto could have been an 80s powerhouse girl power band alongside Pat Benatar, Heart, Quarterflash, Toni Basil, and Scandal if they'd only been given some airplay. Covering ground from hard progressive rock to more sensual and aggressive girl rock sounds, this band could easily have been credited with helping define the sounds of the 80s if they'd been given any notice at all. Not to mention, the vocalist could belt out the rockers with the best of them...and proves it with a rendition of "What About Love," which would be recorded by Heart a few years later. Also charming is the 'new wave' influence on tracks such as the incredibly catchy "Sick & Tired" which allows a synthesizer to carry the hook. Love it.
